4 Safety in the Workplace Workplace safety is an important part of maintaining a healthy, productive work environment. In the last 100 years, great stride has been made for improving overall safety in the workplace. With the evolution of technology and new processes, workplace safety has become an evolving process as well. 4 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013. All rights reserved.

5 Occupational Safety and Heath Act of 1970 OSH Act was enacted to ensure safe and healthy working conditions for people in the workplace. The act authorizes federal enforcement of its standards. The act provides research, information, education, and training to support occupational (workplace) safety and health. 5 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013. All rights reserved.

6 Employee Rights under the OSH Act OSH Act provides the American workforce with the right to a safe and healthy working environment. The act requires employers to provide a workplace that is free of known hazards that could injure or harm their employees. Under the act, workers have a right to: o File complaints to have their workplace inspected by OSHA o Receive training and information about workplace hazards o Review records of workplace injuries o Receive copies of their medical records o Receive copies of test results measuring workplace hazards 6 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013. 7 Responsibility of Employers OSHA requires employers to provide a safe and healthy work environment. Employers must regularly inspect, identify, and correct problems involving employee safety and health. Examples: o Provide ventilation of harmful fumes o Use safer chemicals o Sample air quality and noise pollution in the workplace o Maintain records of workplace injuries o Train employees on workplace hazards and injury prevention 7 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013.
