1 Measuring Making Comparisons SMI1P3

2 Essential Question Can you find different parts of your body that have similar measurements? SMI1P3

3 Review When do we measure in meters?
When do we measure in centimeters? SMI1P3

4 Materials Getters need to get a piece of paper and a meter tape for each student in your group. SMI1P3

5 Estimating and Measuring
1 and 2s will work together and 3s, 4s, and 5s will work together. Estimate each other’s height. Record your estimate and color it yellow. Then use the meter tape to measure each other’s height. SMI1P3

6 Discussion Look at the measurement on your card and line up from shortest to tallest. Why do you think some people are out of place? Let’s see how some people measured each other. SMI1P3

7 Discussion Do any of you keep a record at home of how tall you are?
How do you measure your height at home? Will any of these ways help you get a better measurement? Why? SMI1P3

8 Arm Span Reach your arms out as far as you can.
This is called your arm span. Do you think your arm span is longer, shorter, or the same length as your height? How could we find out? SMI1P3

9 Getters Give each student a Making Comparisons Sheet
Record your height. Measure your arm span and compare your height to your arm span. SMI1P3

10 Estimating and Measuring
Estimate other measurements on the Making Comparisons Sheet. Measure and compare the measurement to your estimation. See if you have other body measurements that are a few centimeters of each other. SMI1P3

11 Discussion What did you find out? SMI1P3

12 Science Journal Arm span – distance from fingertip to fingertip when the arms are outstretched Height – distance on a person from the top of the head to the bottom of the feet Comparisons – similarities or differences between two things SMI1P3

13 Science Journal Essential Question – Can you find different parts of your body that have similar measurements? A person’s arm span and height are about the same length. SMI1P3

14 Assessment Complete Student Sheet 5 – Response Sheet – Linear Measurement SMI1P3
