A Brief History of Suffrage by Ms. Rolling May, 2007

What is Suffrage Suffrage is the right to vote in an election. An important type of suffrage is universal suffrage. Universal suffrage is when all adults in a country have the right to vote without division by race, sex, belief, or, money. Although it has not always been viewed as important to democracy, in the early twenty- first century many regard universal suffrage as an essential component of democracy.

In large the groups excluded from voting were women, blacks and the poor. Some of the largest social movements in history have centered on extending suffrage to disenfranchised groups (e.g., the international women's suffrage movement and the civil rights movement in the United States).

When Sometimes, the exclusion of groups of individuals is written into the laws. For example, in Belgium from 1893 to 1948, only men had the right to vote. In Italy between 1861 and 1912, the vote was limited to those who were male, property owners, and literate. All women in America did not gain the right to vote until 1920 with the passage of the 19 th Amendment.

Groups were also excluded through methods such as poll taxes or literacy requirements. A poll tax refers to a fixed amount to be paid before a citizen is allowed to vote. Poll taxes were most famously used to exclude blacks in the South before the Twenty-Fourth Amendment to the constitution and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. They got around the poll tax for poor white men by using grandfather clauses, which stated that if an individual's grandfather had voted, he was exempt from poll taxes or literacy requirements. How

Summary Today in America things are very different due to the efforts of the women’s suffrage movement and the passage of the, 15 th, 19 th, and 24 th Amendments to the constitution. The 15th Amendment granted the right to vote to African American men. The 19th Amendment states that the right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex. The 24 th Amendment states that no one can be denied the right to vote based on poll tax or any other tax.

Reflection Equality is so important. The privilege to participate in the electoral process should not depend on the color of your skin. I believe that all individuals should have the same right. I give thanks to all of those who came before me and had the courage to fight for what they believed in. You though are very important and should be no less than one page no more than two pages in length
