1 My Bondage and My Freedom by Frederick Douglass Leah Denby and Katie Harbison

2 Frederick Douglas His given name was Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey. Born in February of 1818 Mother was a slave woman and father was an unknown white man; raised by his grandparents. At age 8, he was sent to Baltimore to work, where he learned to read and heard about abolition and abolitionists.

3 While working for Edward Covey, a “slave breaker,” Douglass experienced some of the most horrifying conditions of slavery. After a failed escape attempt and years working at a shipyard, finally frees himself from slavery and moves to Massachusetts, where he marries Anna Murray and changes his last name to Douglass.

4 Became a licensed preacher and joined the abolition movement. Later became and advocate for women’s rights. After his wife of 44 years dies, he marries his secretary Helen Pitts, a white woman. Died February 20, 1895 of heart failure. Wrote 3 autobiographies in his lifetime.

5 My Bondage and My Freedom Spirituals of slaves have more meaning when you hear them as opposed to reading them because you can hear the emotion in the notes. Douglass never truly appreciated the spirituals until after he was no longer a slave and really listened to the words. He finally understood just what freedom meant to slaves. Compared the songs of the slaves to those sung by the Irish during the famine of 1845; both had the same wailing notes.

6 Historical Significance Showed the world the horrors of slavery. Humanized the slaves who were treated like beasts.
