7 WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION Blackboard Discussion Board – K. Korstad – Online Thursday, October 8, 5:30 pm-6:50 pm via CCC Confer Visit the Blackboard Discussion Board Help The discussion board in Blackboard Learn is an asynchronous communication tool that can help build a sense of community among students and enable regular effective contact with instructors. Instructors use this tool to create an online meeting place to collaborate and exchange ideas informally; to pose questions about assignments and course content; and to check all students’ understanding or application of course concepts. Participants will be invited to share their own experiences and effective practices with discussion boards.

8 DISCUSSION BOARD  Blackboard’s discussion board tool allows participants to carry on discussions online, at any time of the day or night, with no need for the participants to be logged into the site at the same time.  The discussion is recorded on the course site for all to review and respond at their convenience.  The discussions may be graded.  You may have multiple discussion board forums in your course – for example, you might choose to have a different forum for each topic.  A course discussion board can contain multiple forums; each forum may contain multiple threads; and each thread may contain multiple postings.

9 SOME WAYS THAT DISCUSSION BOARDS ARE USED INCLUDE: Instructors post questions on a course discussion board, which students respond to before a class session Instructors have students post their work to a discussion board so other students can see it Students post reading responses to a discussion board Students post technical support or other questions that other students and the instructor can reply to.

11 GOOD PRACTICES FOR DISCUSSION BOARDS  Tie your discussion board activities to relevant information within your class.  Introductions  Discussing the materials before the class, after the class, as part of the class (online/hybrid)  Turning Assignments in  Avoid discussion boards that make the student feel have no point or relevance to the class. These will feel like busy work to the student.  Give points to the discussion board. Even nominal points of 1-2 points help encourage participation.  Participate in your discussion board and ask question that encourage discussion.  If the discussion is getting off track, make a post that helps lead students back to the topic.  Use questions prompts & directions that encourage thought and clarity as to what type of response you hoping for.
