1 Question of the Day 11-30 Do you think climate change is really happening? Explain your view.

2 Human Disturbances

3 Climate vs. Weather What’s the difference? Weather – Climate –
Primarily deals with temperature, humidity, wind, rainfall, etc UP TO TWO WEEKS Climate – Primarily deals with temperature, humidity, wind, rainfall, etc OVER LONG PERIODS OF TIME

4 Climate Change – General Info
The majority of greenhouse gasses have been emitted since the beginning of the industrial revolution The burning of fossil fuels (and biomass) releases carbon that has been trapped for millions of years This carbon is released in the form of CO2 The three main fossil fuels are coal, oil and natural gas Slash and burn farming reduces the ability of Earth’s forests to soak up the CO2. This also releases the Carbon that was trapped in the trees, into the atmosphere in the form of carbon dioxide

5 Population size and Global Warming
Industrializing nations What is the main issue with industrializing nations that have very large populations? They are burning fossil fuels at an enormous rate (more people = more pollution) What are two industrializing nations with large populations? China population = 1.3 billion India population = 1.1 billion (US population = 300 million)

6 What is the Greenhouse Effect?:
Greenhouse effect – process which infrared radiation is trapped near Earth’s surface, which keeps the planet warm Greenhouse gasses: Carbon dioxide Methane – come from agriculture Water Vapor Ozone CFC’s Nitrogen Oxides

7 2nd Unit # 3 Book Work Assignment: 1st Unit # 3 Book Work Assignment:
Read pages and answer Lesson Review #s 1-6 on page 205 1st Unit # 3 Book Work Assignment: Read about the Carbon Cycle (pages ) AND study the diagram on page 166, then answer questions 1-3 on page 168. PARTNER = OK 3 OR MORE = NOT OK

8 Question of the Day 12-2 How are greenhouse gases produced?
One example of a greenhouse gas = _____.

9 Question of the Day 12-2 Describe and interpret patterns of change in natural systems. Analyze patterns of change in natural systems over time. Discuss the greenhouse effect.

10 Evidence of Global Warming…?

11 What is the greenhouse effect?

12 Greenhouse Effect MSNBC

13

14 Greenhouse Effect Is the greenhouse effect a good thing?
YES – Earth would be much cooler without it What is the problem? The problem is that TOO much of the sun’s radiation is being trapped inside our atmosphere What is causing the problem? That too many greenhouse gasses are trapping more of the suns energy

15 Climate Protest

16 CO2 and Temp What we see is a positive correlation between the temperature and the levels of Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere. This means the more carbon dioxide there is, the higher the temperature will be Carbon levels are now at their highest level in 150,000 years (actually 650,000 years)

17 Reading the graphs…

18 Carbon Dioxide Variations

19 CO2 Concentrations

20 Average Temp Increase - (Since 1855)
Current Temperature Increase: Overall temperature on earth (near the surface) has increased 1.33 degree Fahrenheit (± 0.32 F) in the 20th century. Models predict that the temperature will rise a further 2.0 to  °F in the st Century. Hottest Years in years The hottest years recorded, EVER since recording began in 1880 were within the last 10 years

21

22 One thing you know about greenhouse gases?

23 2nd Unit # 3 Book Work Assignment: 1st Unit # 3 Book Work Assignment:
Read pages and answer Lesson Review #s 1-6 on page 205 1st Unit # 3 Book Work Assignment: Read about the Carbon Cycle (pages ) AND study the diagram on page 166, then answer questions 1-3 on page 168. PARTNER = OK 3 OR MORE = NOT OK

24 Question of the Day 12-6 Which greenhouse gas typically comes from agriculture? Today: Discuss hurricane strength Discuss melting arctic ices

25 cute review vide 1:19 in

26 Where is the temperature increase?
Most of the increase is near the poles

27 Sea Level Rise What two factors will cause the sea level to rise?
Melting of land ice (why not floating glaciers?) Thermal expansion of the ocean

28

29 Shifts in weather patterns
Some areas will get more precipitation, others less What causes seasons?

30 Hurricane Strength As ocean waters warm, we can expect to see
More intense hurricanes Show video

31 Arctic Ices Shrinking North Pole ice melts and freezes each year
BUT, it’s melting more and freezing less than ever before

32 Effects of Climate Change
REVIEW Effects of Climate Change Melting land glaciers Melting arctic ice Hurricane strength increase Shifts in weather patterns
