3 The observation time 1 The building is an older one, the inside is well kept and there are flags put up as well as student work on every floor. The building has 3 floors with classrooms on every floor and the main office in the centre of the ground floor. The hallways are of medium size with vaulted ceilings, giving a voluminous impression. It is a very international environment. Being on the inside of the building, it is clear that is a school but the flags create an atmosphere much like that found in international schools—giving way to Eastern High School being an International Baccalaureate (IB) School. As well this is a representation of the student body with a plethora of countries and ethnic backgrounds represented therein.

4 The Counselor Logistics Guidance Counselors are available to see their students for a number of reasons: Schedule changes, peer conflicts, the need for self expression, etc. The Guidance counselors are fairly familiar with the foreign language, but mainly on the level of the fulfillment of student requirements. The counselors just select foreign language classes at random with only the class size limit in mind.

5 The Student Body The student body is made up of very different and numerous ethnic groups. Students from various countries and generations go to Eastern. The graduation rate according to the 2008-2009 Annual Report was 62% for Eastern High School. According to schooldigger.com, Eastern had approximately 1383 students. It broke down the student population according to ethnic background as follows: *Afr Amer445 White565 Hispanic291 Asian57 Native American25 *I have reason to believe that even those that are considered African, from the continent fall into this category.

6 The observation time 2 Mrs Rose’s room is lined with numerous amounts of students work, posters and murals (painted wall images). She has books on shelves and on a cart; she has a projector as well as a separate CPU desk. The room in size is very small, split in half with approximately 17 desks on each side. Her room is very colourful, and added with the size of her room, it presents a “nice warm cozy” feeling. This all culminates into making a welcoming and student friendly environment. She welcomes all of her student into the classroom with a greeting, almost always, in the target language. She wears a constant smile and tries to liven her classroom by talking to her students.

7 The teacher Mrs Rose became a French teacher to reconnect with the French side of her family. She has stayed in France on a number of occasions. Mrs Rose thoroughly loves teaching French, but she took a break after having a child. She says that her teaching style has changed tremendously over the years. She has a very mixed style of teaching, though her base (and half her time teaching) is the communicative approach. She tries to have everyone use the language in a communicating manner. As well the audio-lingual method is very visible in her class. She has the students repeat after her on a number of occasions, as well she goes over dialogues—trying to give them the correct form of the vocabulary. So far the assignments that the students have turned in have been written grammar exercises or dialogues.
