Leading up to the Revolutionary War Tensions had been building between British and colonists for more than a decade before war broke out. Extremely dissatisfied with British government attempt to raise revenue by taking the colonies. Colonists had very little representation in English Parliament. Riots and rebellions reflect discontent of colonists. Continental Congress meets to denounce taxation without representation. July 4 th, 1776 colonists declare independence from Great Britain.

Revolutionary War 1775-1783 The conflict arose from growing tensions between residents of Great Britain's 13 North American colonies and the colonial government, which represented the British crown. France entered on the side of the colonists in 1778 After French assistance helped the Continental Army force the British surrender at Yorktown, Virginia, in 1779, the Americans had effectively won their independence.

Bell ringer Generate a list of complaints that you have about the treatment of young people.

Think of one topic, complaint or issue that you can declare your independence from.

Bell ringer WHO makes the rules you don't like? WHO decides if they are fair or not? HOW does one get them changed? WHAT does it mean to be independent from the rules?

So what are YOU going to do about it? In hopes of effecting some changes, they are going to compose a document based on their complaints to be sent to the appropriate audience. First, we must dissect parts of the Declaration. Get out your assignment notebooks.

Preamble (from "WHEN, in the Course of human Events" to "declare the Causes which impel them to the Separation.") What reason(s) did the Founding Fathers give for their decision to write out a declaration?

Statement of beliefs (from "We hold these Truths to be self-evident" to "an absolute Tyranny over these States"). What beliefs did the Founding Fathers declare they held?

List of complaints (from "To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid World" to "unfit to be the ruler of a free people"). What are a few of the complaints? Are any specific events mentioned? If not, is the information given sometimes sufficient to figure out to which events the complaints refer?

Bell ringer If you were given 60 seconds to give a convincing statement to the ENTIRE WORLD how would you suggest we improve it? 60 second idea to improve the world…

To Form a More Perfect Union… After the North American colonies defeated Great Britain to gain independence they were saved with a new task……preserving it. Independence raised new issues. How could thirteen separate self-governed states unite? What form would that union take? The Articles of Confederation (1781-1789) were America's first attempt to govern itself as an independent nation.

Weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation Majority of power was granted to States Congress had no right to tax, difficult to keep finances in order To change or amend the Articles, unanimous consent of all states was required. There was no central military or monetary system.

The Constitutional Convention The Constitutional Convention of 1787 proposed a new constitution establishing a much stronger national government.
