3. 3 Land Degradation Assessment in Dry lands LADA (GEF US$7m, Co-fin US$8m, 2006 - 2010) Main Objectives:  to develop methods to assess and quantify the nature, extent, severity and impacts of land degradation on ecosystems in drylands  to build assessment capacities to enable the design, planning and implementation of interventions to mitigate land degradation through sustainable land use & management practices

4. Project outcomes   National and subnational land use systems maps – assessment of land degradation and improvements (surveys and mapping largely based on existing data)   Local-level assessments through participatory field surveys – assessing both biophysical and socio- economics parameters

LADA Lessons Learned in China Key success factors:  Organization of the LADA China team with several working groups  Presence of many different types of expertise within the team which has –enabled full involvement of the team in all phases of the work –facilitated training and exchange of experiences –increased the sense of ownership of the activity  A regional training centre has been established in China for dissemination to other countries  Participatory approach combining expert assessment and local knowledge 5

LADA Lessons cont...  Use of existing information/ datasets advisable – gives consistency to the results & less prone to interpretation  Level of administrative units used for the assessment is important – units at low level could ensure a higher detail, but would also imply more work  Coordination and collaboration among different institutions & national groups working on other GEF projects important 7

8. 8 (GEF US$3.5m, Co-fin US$14m, 2008 - 2013)  Objective: to promote conservation and adaptive management of globally significant agricultural biodiversity in globally important agricultural heritage systems  Lead national institution (executing agency) a big factor in achievement of project objective  Clear definition of roles and responsibilities at an early stage – especially for project management structure with several layers  Changes in key officials involved in the project should be anticipated GIAHS Lessons Learned in China and Philippines
