2 Transportation Scenarios This Interactive Session Will Focus On Transportation Scenarios That Transportation Personnel Are Faced With Daily In The Course Of Providing Services For Students With Disabilities. Best Practices And Solutions Will Be Discussed. The Presenters Include A Diverse Panel Of Individuals With Expertise In Policies And Procedures, Transportation Leadership, Staff Development And School Bus Operations. 2

3 Critical Thinking Scenario One There is a scheduled meeting with a State Advocacy Group to discuss multiple transportation concerns involving special needs students. The Directors of Special Education and Transportation are prepared to respond to questions previously submitted by the advocates. However, when the advocates arrive they bring up unknown issues for discussion. How Should Both Directors Proceed? 3 IEP

4 Critical Thinking Scenario Two The Superintendent of Schools is taken by surprise when he is asked in a public forum for an explanation of the school districts policy on transporting service animals. The media is present and ready to write down every word. The Superintendent of Schools turns to you and requests that you respond to this unanticipated question. What Are Your Options? 4 Policies & Procedures

5 Critical Thinking Scenario Three You just received a call from an individual reporting they observed a school bus driver stepping off of a school bus and walking into a donut shop. The driver was observed purchasing a cup of coffee and a donut, while several children sitting in wheelchairs were left alone on the school bus. This individual shares that they have pictures on their cell phone to prove what was observed. They request to deliver the pictures (immediately) to the school district. What Are Your Next Steps? 5

6 Critical Thinking Scenario Four A parent brings a child safety restraint system to the bus stop that she purchased on-line. She insists her child wear the child safety restraint system because she was informed by the Special Education Department that her child is a runner and he could not be found in the school building for twenty-minutes. How should you respond? 6

7 Critical Thinking Scenario Five The first day of school the transportation office receives a call from a parent stating that her child has a life threatening peanut allergy and no child can ride on the bus that may have a peanut butter sandwich. She wants each child to be asked before boarding the bus. What is the best solution for a route that is to begin for the first time in ten minutes? 7

8 Critical Thinking Scenario Six A parent calls and requests a bus with a lift for her child’s service animal that is a miniature horse because it cannot negotiate the steps to ride with the child. What is your response? 8
