Opening Activity  In your spirals, write the activities below in order from what should be done first to what should be done last.  List One  Put on shoes  Put on pants  Put on socks  Lis t Two  Take a test  Study Does the order you do things matter?

Order of Operations LG 601: Students will be able to apply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to algebraic equations.

Today’s Objective

Think – Pair - Share Have you ever heard of Order of Operations? Have you ever heard it referred to as something else? Order of Operations is often known as PEMDAS Order of Operations – A set of rules for evaluating expressions with more than one operation.

PEMDAS  Please  Excuse  My Dear  Aunt Sally  Parenthesis  Exponents  Multiplication & Division  Addition & Subtraction

PEMDAS Round Robin Each player at the team will have approximately 15 seconds to give their opinion to the following questions. Could we also write PEMDAS as PEDMSA? Why or why not? Multiplication & division are solved at the same level. Addition and subtraction are solved at the same level. When a problem has just multiplication & division, or just addition & subtraction, you must work left to right.

Time for a song… Flocabulary - PEMDAS

Solve the following problems in your spiral 1) 5 + 6 – 3 + 82) 10 ÷ 2 x 43) 7 – 5 + 12 16 20 14 Remember to solve left to right

Exponents  What are exponents? Exponents - a number that tells how many times another number, called the base, is used as a factor. 4242 Base Exponent

Exponents What is the correct solution to the expression below? 3 3 x 3 = 9 or 3 x 3 x 3 = 27 x

Your Turn… Write the following exponential expressions in expanded form, then solve. Compare with your shoulder partner when you are done. 2424 5353

Let’s Put it Together  Solve the following expressions using order of operations. 4 x 3 2 - 5 7 + 4 ÷ 2 2 Exponents: 4 x 3 2 - 5 Multiplication: 4 x 9 - 5 Subtraction: 36 - 5 Answer: 31 Exponents: 7 + 4 ÷ 2 2 Division: 7 + 4 ÷ 4 Addition: 7 + 1 Answer: 8

You Try… 3 + 10 2 ÷ 2521 ÷ 3 – 5 + 2 2

What about parenthesis? Parts of the equations that are in parenthesis are always done first, no matter what operation must be performed. 5 x (3 + 3) ÷ 15 5 x 6 ÷ 15 30 ÷ 15 = 2 4 + 6 2 ÷ (5 + 4) 4 + 6 2 ÷ 9 4 + 36 ÷ 9 4 + 4 = 8

You Try… Solve the following problems in your spiral. Compare with your shoulder partner when you are both done. 6 2 ÷ 6 ÷ 332 ÷ (2 + 6) x 5 + 5 2 25

Exit Slip A student solved the problem below using the steps listed. Find the error in her steps and answer the following in complete sentences. 1) What was her error? 2) What should she have done instead? 3 2 + 3 x (5 + 1) ÷ 6 3 2 + 3 x (6) ÷ 6 9 + 3 x 6 ÷ 6 12 x 6 ÷ 6 72 ÷ 6 = 12

Homework  Page 122, #1-6  Due Monday (Green) or Tuesday (White)
