James in Review Peter Fitch, St. Croix Vineyard Sunday, May 25, 2014

Some important ideas Words like “world” & “rich” used more than one way Book seems to focus on two different ways to live Characteristics of the two ways are examined throughout

And some important passages 1:2 Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. 4 And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. 5 But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

6 But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that man ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord, 8 being a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

1:19 But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; 20 for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God.

2:14 What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and be filled,” and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that? 17 Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself.

3:17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy. 18 And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

4:8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

5:13 Is anyone among you suffering? Then he must pray. Is anyone cheerful? He is to sing praises. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord;

15 and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him. 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.

Two ways An economy of exploitation characterized by competitive striving, individual benefit, domination, oppression, greed and malice An economy of generosity characterized by serving God, building a prophetic community of faith and action

Didache Other writings in the Apostolic Fathers Augustine’s City of God

Two roads from which to choose The road to Glory or the Fools Highway Two roads from which to choose The rocky one or the Lord's new Free Way (Chuck Butler and Tom Stipe)

Robert Frost Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth...

Secrets “Draw near...” seems like it’s about prayer but in context is probably more about going God’s way This is similar with the difficult passage related to asking for wisdom—who is the double- minded one? Not someone who is waffling in their inner faith or thoughts, but one who is going back and forth between the ways

God’s Way Guidance available Listening more important than talking Rich & poor both treated fairly and well Action more important than an inner feeling of faith Speech to be kind and sincere, building others up

Wisdom is full of peace, reasonable, brings parties together Humility essential Patience important Hidden Presence of God enriches the journey & brings healing

James challenges us... To value different things To live a different way To build prophetic communities To embrace the hidden gifts that are waiting for those who make these choices
