WaG #3 When do you use capitalization?

Please look carefully at the following samples to determine what you notice about CAPITALIZATION. What writing or grammar rules can you identify?  We will take our road trip to Colorado in the spring.  In March, I am looking forward to seeing the Rocky Mountains.  Sophia asked, “Can we also go to a Broncos game or to the Denver Museum of Natural History?”  “We’ll see if we have enough time,” Assistant Principal Ms. Wong answered, “after we see Phantom of the Opera on Saturday.”

YOU SHOULD CAPITALIZE…  the 1 st word in a sentence  the 1 st word in a quotation (if it’s a complete sentence)  if the sentence is in two parts, only capitalize the 1 st word  the pronoun “I”  all proper nouns (specific)  people’s names & titles  places (both geographic locations, special places, & items)  specific events and periods of time  organizations & groups  languages  brand or store names  all titles (both italicized & in quotation marks)  What else can you think of that should be capitalized?

Please copy these samples into the WaG section of your notebook.  I have never been to New York City, but I’d like to see the Empire State Building.  “Where is that,” Charlie asked, “in relation to Times Square?”  Coach Matawaran is confident that Canyon will win the Battle of the Valley.  “If you need more pages for Quarter 1, you should read Eragon before October 21,” she suggested.

Now add at least 2 of your own sentences that use correct capitalization  Try to include each of the 4 different items from the list in your notes  the 1 st word in a sentence  the 1 st word in a quotation  the pronoun “I”  a proper noun

WaG #3 Quiz – Friday, 9/26  Review the rules of capitalization!  If you earn a B or better, you’ve proven that you do not need homework to review it.  If you earn a C or lower, you will need to do some reteach homework for more practice.
