They Have A Positive Impact on Student Learning and Achievement? Interactive Whiteboards By Mr Saem Mashhud Tariq

Newsweek magazine reported that more than 70% of primary and secondary schools in the U.K. have interactive whiteboards compared to only 16% in the U.S. Not surprisingly, the majority of the research findings originate in the U.K., although recent U.S. studies report increased student engagement, school attendance, and higher test scores. Judging from recent news reports, it is likely that a portion of the new federal education stimulus funding will be invested in interactive whiteboards.

Interactive Whiteboards Enhance Classroom Instruction and Learning Classroom applications for using interactive whiteboards include: Multimedia lessons and presentations including audio and video Collaborative problem solving Showcasing student projects and presentations Virtual field trips Recorded lessons that can be used by substitute teachers Documentation of student achievement

Lessons are more memorable because students are more engaged and motivated. Students are able to focus more on the learning moment rather than worry about capturing everything through note taking Several different learning styles are accommodated when learning is delivered with an interactive whiteboard, improving chances of student retention during class Notes generated on an interactive whiteboard can be printed or e- mailed for distribution after class, ensuring the student has good review material to support information retention

Four Main Points What are Interactive Whiteboards? Can Whiteboards Enhance Teaching & Learning? Can Whiteboards Increase Student Engagement? Can Whiteboards Help With Student Achievement ?

Advantages of Whiteboards #1. Whiteboards are touch-sensitive More teacher/student interaction #2. More hands-on activities More student participation #3. More visual learning for students Students are more engaged

Point #2. Enhancement of Learning Studies show students believe they learn better with whiteboards Use of touch affects student learning in a positive way Teachers using whiteboards note their students are more engaged Whiteboards allow teachers to differentiate their instruction easier Whiteboards can help teachers with organization

Point #3. Whiteboards and Student Engagement With Whiteboards Without Whiteboards Whiteboards allow more visual learning which to more engagement More “hands-on” opportunities result in more student engagement Students often are not motivated Students can become bored and off task There is less chances for visual and hands-on learning for students

Point #4. Student Achievement Research shows that students have increased attention level when interactive whiteboards are used. Studies show that whiteboards may help increase standardized test scores. Data shows that students who learn with a whiteboard may outperform students who do not have access to whiteboards.

CONCLUSIONS Whiteboards help with enhancement of lesson plans for teachers Use of interactive whiteboards by teachers has shown greater student engagement Use of interactive whiteboards by teachers can have a positive impact on student achievement and performance
