2 Competence “The competence of the instructor is probably the biggest single factor affecting safety in adventure activates”. Competence is more than knowledge or technical skills. The biggest single cause of accidents in adventure activities is human error accidents. Competence can not be taught – it must be learned. And that takes time.

4 Adventure Activities, National Governing Bodies, and the law. Following safe working practices as identified by a relevant NGB is likely to be sufficient to satisfy the requirements of the Adventure Activities Licensing Regulations (AALR) and the Health and Safety at Work Act (HASAWA).
