2. Step 1 Read article entirely and create a thesis statement.
Thesis Statement = Subject + Direction + 3 Reasons

3. Step 2
Based off of your thesis statement, do a close read protocol on the article.
Look for evidence in the story that supports the reasons in your thesis statement.

4. Close read protocol Highlight GREEN words GREEN (statement)
(Green words are the BIG IDEA/Important/Meaningful words)
Highlight the PROOF in PINK (proof/quotes)
(Look for quotes that support your thesis statement)
Highlight your thoughts on the quotes in YELLOW (Commentary)
(How do you feel about the quote, what is your reaction)

5. Format of Essay
Introduction: Attention Grabber, 2 pieces of background of information, thesis statement
Body paragraph 1, 2, and 3: Topic Sentence/statement, proof, commentary, transition
Closing: Restate main idea of each paragraph, restate thesis, closing sentence.
Topic sentences: The sentence that starts off each paragraph. They let the reader know what the paragraph will be about. They are the three reasons that come from your thesis.
A transition sentence is a sentence that prepares the reader for what the next paragraph will be about.

6. Thesis
According to the article, the American hero is someone who has fallen and then climbed back to the top. I agree/disagree because reason 1, reason 2, and reason 3.
Tips to remember: Do not use the word “you” or use any contractions. (Couldn’t, shouldn’t)
