n Treat every page like the front page: someone might Google your page. Allow them to find the home page easily. n Navigational buttons: Use Back/Next/Home... n OR Use a complete set of buttons on each page. Orientation

n When writing articles: Use headlines and subheads all the time. n Headlines should provide the initial hook. n Subheads should provide additional details and connect the reader to the article. Headlines and Subheads

Audience n Analyze your audience: n Who will be visiting your website? Adults? Kids? Students? Farmers? Teachers? Business people? n Use language that is appropriate for your audience. Always explain in great detail.

Review your website n Purpose n Audience n Content n Appearance n Accessibility n Organization

Sources of information: 1) Yourself 2) The Web 3) Printed sources 4) Experts 5) Your client Use all of these sources to develop information for your website.

Copy and Paste? You should not copy and paste from other websites unless you have permission. Then you must use the terms, “Reprinted with Permission.” Otherwise, if you are borrowing from a source, you must re-write the information to put it into your own words. You must also cite the original source. Never copy information verbatim.

Other webwriting tips n Use strong verbs in webwriting. n Use simple sentences. n Tighten, tighten, tighten. I admit that my first drafts contain extra words. n Sometimes my mind has to reveal the words in a certain way in order for me to capture them on paper. That’s okay. n However, I also review my work and remove any unnecessary words. You should do the same. n Be precise. Explain everything like you are speaking to a fifth-grader.

Assignments n Begin writing your articles. Don’t wait, because they need to be perfect for publication, so you’re going to need to make revisions. n Begin taking photographs. Take 25 in order to get your best five. Once you have taken your photos, bring them to class and share them with me. I will make suggestions. We will eventually edit these photos in PhotoShop. n Review the course syllabus once again so you know exactly what is expected. n Review the course timeline once again so you can set your expectations for the rest of the term.
