Wilbur was born in Millville, Indiana on April 16, 1867. He died from Typhoid at the age of 45. Wilbur was a very quiet and shy person in school. Orville was born in Dayton, Ohio on August 19, 1871. He showed an interest in technology and science early in life.

 1867- Wilbur Wright born near Millville, Indiana.  1871- Orville Wright born in Dayton, Ohio.  1878- Orville and Wilbur’s father give them a toy helicopter. They study the toy helicopter and build their first aircraft. They call it a “bat”. This gives them the inspiration to fly.  1899- Wilbur writes to the Smithsonian Institution for information on aeronautics. He also invents a revolutionary control system for the aircraft plane called” wing-warping” and a five-foot glider to test it.  1900- Wilbur receives a letter from William Tate in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, informing the Wright Brothers about the weather and invite them to test their glider.  1901- The Wrights return to Kitty Hawk to test their glider. They tried unsuccessfully and left Kitty Hawk to improve their glider. In November in Dayton they built a wind tunnel and used it to test different wing shapes.  1902- Wilbur and Orville return to Kitty Hawk to test their glider again, this time they were successful.  1903-In February the Wrights test the new engine for the powered machine, the “flyer”. On December17, Orville made the first ever controlled, sustained powered flight in Kitty Hawk.  1904 to 1905- The Wright Brothers work on their “Wright Flyer” and develop the first ever practical aircraft.

This is the Wright Brothers design of the Flyer.

The 1903 Wright Flyer was constructed of spruce and ash covered with muslin. The frame work floated in fabric pockets sewn inside. This feature made the aircraft light, strong, and flexible. The 1903 Flyer was powered by a simple four- cylinder engine of the wrights’ own design.

The airplane changed over the years from 1903-and beyond. In the 1900’s the number of people it could hold was 1 or 2. Now in our days a common passenger plane can hold up to 200. The safety of the plane back then was terrible. Air Travel today is safer than car travel.
