2  Born in Boston, Massachusetts to struggling actors  Orphaned at 3 years old taken in by John and Frances Allan  Entered the University of Virginia, but left within a year due to drinking & gambling.  Allan refused to help with the $2,000 in debt that Poe accumulated

3  At 18, he fights with Allan and joins the army, but is discharged 2 years later  In 1834, Allan dies and leaves Poe nothing  At 26, he proposes to his 13 year old cousin, Virginia Clemm  In 1847, Virginia Clemm dies of tuberculosis  Poe dies in Baltimore, Maryland on October 7, 1849

4  First appeared in print in January 1845  Only received $15 for the original printing  Poe did not profit much from the reprints, but it helped him establish a better reputation  Wanted to use the most melancholy topic known to mankind – death of a beautiful lover  Most likely written during 1844, when Clemm was seriously ill

6  Rewrite “The Raven” or compose a poem inspired by “The Raven” in 108 words, one from each line of the poem.  From each line, choose one word. Create a word bank of the 108 words you have chosen. Then, craft these words together in any order to create your own poem.
