2.  The protagonist’s journey is enriched by encounters with characters that hold differing beliefs.  One such character type, a “foil”, has traits that contrast with the protagonist’s and highlight important features of the main character’s personality.  The most important foil, the “antagonist”, opposes the protagonist, barring or complicating his or her success.

3.  Divide into groups of four.  Each group will be assigned one of the four Mirabal sisters.  Each group should write a report that analyzes the personal strengths and weaknesses of its assigned character.

4.  Read “The Roles of Women in the Dominican Republic”  Minerva Mirabal learns of her father’s infidelity in Chapter Six.  What do we learn about Minerva in this short scene?  Why does she tell her father that her kindness toward his mistress and children are “things a woman does”?  Does understanding the traditional roles of women in the Dominican Republic make it more shocking when Minerva slaps Trujillo? Why or why not? How does the author use such scenes to help us understand the depth of a character?

5.  Read Chapter 7.  Find three examples of figurative language in the chapters you have read so far.
