4. Key Statistics ( state funded schools ) Primary: 450,000 students (8 year cycle) in 3000 schools Secondary: 320,000 students (6 year cycle) in 740 schools Third level: 140,000. (37,000 – 1980)

5. Educational Disadvantage and Social Inclusion. 1000 students do not transfer from Primary to secondary. 2400 leave secondary with no qualification. Approx 13% leave school with a Junior Certificate but without a Leaving Certificate.
