1 The Interactive Student Notebook Objective: Students will be able to set-up their interactive student notebook.

2 Do-Now (Glue in Left-Side) Are you a good note maker? Who taught you how to make notes? Did the notes actually help you?

3 Do-now Write down your homework: SS HW: Design your cover and title page with at least 5 different colors or pictures Get syllabus signed ELA HW: Finish reading procedures packet and complete a full page of “Respect /Responsibility Chart” (10 more examples)

4 Class Syllabus A syllabus tells you what you will learn all year and general rules, procedures, grading, late work policy, etc. We will read it together as a class now and your homework is to get this sheet signed.

5 How is our Civics-in-Action-Notebook different from our ELA notebook? It has a special set-up. In your ELA notebook, you just go onto the next page to start a new entry and can take as much or as little space as you want to write information. But your Social Studies notebook (CAN) will be organized in a very specific way.

6 On the Cover Write your first and last name Civics in Action Notebook Hr. 213 Ms. Samadi

7 Let’s setup the Interactive Student Notebook A Starting on the FIRST lined page after the cover, letter the pages front and back “A thru H”.“H” should be on the left- hand side – these “lettered” pages will be your administrative pages.

8 Now, for the rest of the pages.. On the immediate next right side page, write “1” Number the pages front and back thru to 20 1

9 The Interactive Notebook Allows Students to… Record information about history in an engaging way Transform written concepts into visuals Use several types of writing and innovative graphic techniques

10 The Interactive Notebook Includes: a student’s unique and personal style words, diagrams, bullets and arrows key ideas underlined in color or highlighted venn diagrams that show relationships

11 The Interactive Notebook Allows Students To find the main point of a political cartoon organize information and ponder historical questions encourages students to use their critical- thinking skills organize historical events into a topical net

12 Organization of Information Left Side The output side Student directed Interpretations and reactions to material Right Side The input side Teacher directed Notes from readings, lectures and classwork

13 Notebook Pages Left Side the even numbered page side. a place for students to process new ideas a place for students to clarify their values on controversial issues a place for students to show evidence of understanding of content Right Side the odd numbered page side. where the teacher organizes a common set of information that all students must know a place for the teachers to model for students how to think graphically. a place for short handouts with new information.
