2 Controlled Substances Act of 1971 Requires that every person who manufactures, dispenses, prescribes, or administers any controlled substance be registered annual with the AG Register maintained by DEA

3 Schedule I Drugs - High potential for abuse –No currently accepted medicinal use in US –Lack of accepted safety –Opiates –Opium derivatives: heroin –Hallucinogens: LSD, MJ, mescaline, peyote

4 Schedule II Drugs High potential for abuse –Currently accepted medical use in US with/wo severe restrictions –Abuse of drug or other substance may lead to severe psychological or physical dependence –Opium and its derivatives –Coca leaves and derivatives - cocaine –Opiates: methadone, diphenoxylate, –Stimulants: amphetamine, phenmetrazine –Depressants: secobarbital, pentobarbital

5 Schedule III Drugs Lower abuse potential than I or II drugs Currently accepted medical use in US Abuse may lead to moderate or low physical dependence or high psychological dependence. Nalorphine Combination of barbital with other ingredients Compounds of I or II drugs with active non- narcotic ingredients

6 Schedule IV Drug Low potential for abuse compared to higher schedule drugs Currently accepted medical use in US Abuse may lead to limited physical or psychological dependence relative to III drugs chloral hydrate, diazepam, oxazepam

7 Schedule V Drugs Low abuse potential compared to higher schedule drugs Currently accepted medical use in US Abuse may lead to limited physical or psychological dependence relative to III drugs Compounds with lower concentrations than Schedule III compounds Lomatil
