Viruses

Viruses Viruses are not strictly alive, because they do not carry out their own life activities and reproduction. In other words, without a host cell, viruses cannot carry out their life-sustaining functions or reproduce. They are also non-cellular, which means they are not made up of cells. Viruses are so small that they can only be viewed under electron microscopes.

Viruses Viruses can infect all sorts of organisms, such as bacteria, algae, protozoa, fungi, plants and animals. Here are some of the more common viruses and the diseases they cause………………..

Viruses 1. Hepatitis 2. Foot-and-Mouth Disease 3. Rabies 4. West Nile Fever 5. SARS (Coronavirus) 6. AIDS (human immunodeficiency virus) 7. Herpes 8. Influenza 9. Mumps 10. Pox

Mumps Hepatitis Pox

Viruses The fight against viral infection greatly depends on the body’s immune system. Vaccination can also help to protect those who are infected with viral diseases.

There are over a trillion cells working together in your body and every cell has information that allows it to survive and reproduce outside of your body. This information is used to control the make up of the cell (the cell's function, the way it looks, etc...). Where is this information stored? Do you know……….

DNA Deoxyribonucleic Acid

DNA is consisted of two strands coiled around each other, forming a double helix.

Each strand is composed of: -Sugar molecules -Phosphoric acid molecules -Organic bases
