2. Remember… EVERY source in your Works Cited MUST correspond to a parenthetical citation in your essay or report. Every parenthetical citation MUST correspond to a source in your Works Cited.

3. To reference or not to reference… Reference quotations, paraphrases, summaries, ideas, and facts and figures (unless commonly known). Is it a statement that would be regarded as common knowledge? Don’t reference it. Caution – defining “common knowledge” can be tricky as it depends on your audience. Not sure? Reference it. Don’t be afraid to ask for help!

4. Parenthetical Citations: Why? used instead of footnotes or endnotes serve the same purpose: tell reader what material is borrowed and from where refer reader to Works Cited for complete information

5. Parenthetical Citations: How? embedded in essay or report place parentheses (…) at end of borrowed material –can be in middle of sentence –can have multiple references in same sentence –reference is BEFORE closing punctuation include author(s)’ name(s), short title, page number e.g. (Doe, School Library 10) in text refers to Doe, Jane.
