1 21. WeWAIR Citizens sensing of air quality for personal and urban health Point of contact: Matt Leeuw, TNO Markets covered: Personal Health, Environmental monitoring, Sensor development

2 Project idea As more and more people are living in dense and heavily burdened urban areas the need and call for insights in environmental quality is increasing fast. The development of wearable and affordable sensors with sufficient accuracy for monitoring air quality will give stakeholders insight in air quality and local exposure. Measuring and monitoring by these sensors as part the IoT will generate large amounts of geo referenced data precise enough to enrich the more exact data from high costs high sensitive sensors to generate more detailed and real-time views on the actual state of air quality.

3 Innovations Low cost air quality sensors that are accurate and wearable; Data processing and interpretation, enrichment of high cost coarse networked sensitive data collection; Direct measurement of personal exposure; Continuous real-time visualization of data from connected sensors and dashboards for operational excellence in smart city operations; Possible extension to other environmental indicators.

4 Business impact / market relevance Increasing interest in personalized sensoring of air quality is a major change for tech companies to develop the tools to sense air quality and share readings, process data and provide meaning to the information; An increasing number of people exposed to poor air-quality who want to know on the spot and what they are exposed to in order to be able to adjust personal behaviour leads to the development of a new market for personalized sensing devices; Development of sensors as part of the IoT will generate detailed insights which are of great value to policymakers and industry.
