When you eat foods such as bread, meat, and vegetables they are not in a form that the body can use as nourishment. Food and drink must be changed into smaller molecules of nutrients before they can be absorbed into the blood and carried to cells throughout the body. Digestion is the process by which food and drink are broken down into their smallest parts so the body can use them to build and nourish cells and to provide energy.

Food is mechanically broken down by the teeth, increasing the surface area. Saliva, containing the enzyme amylase, breaks down starch into glucose. Food is brought down to the stomach through the esophagus by peristalsis.

Located in your throat near your trachea (windpipe), the esophagus receives food from your mouth when you swallow. By means of a series of muscular contractions called peristalsis, the esophagus delivers food to your stomach.

The stomach is a hollow organ, or "container," that holds food while it is being mixed with enzymes that continue the process of breaking down food into a usable form. Cells in the lining of the stomach secrete a strong acid and powerful enzymes that are responsible for the breakdown process. When the contents of the stomach are sufficiently processed, they are released into the small intestine.

Intestinal juice contains the same enzymes as the duodenum. Most food is digested here as it is 8 metres long. The wall of the intestine contains millions of finger like projections called villi so the surface area is increased.

Here the broken down food is absorbed into the blood stream. Glucose is used for energy, but sometimes it must be stored because too much is created than needed. Glucose can be stored in the short term as Glycogen. It is stored in the liver. The long-term storage of glucose is its conversion into fat where it is stored under the skin.
