1 Application for Classroom Headline Analysis Activity

2 Activity Learning Objective Through identifying, reviewing, and leading discussions on current business world “headlines,” students develop their understanding and appreciation for the demonstration and impact of the REFLECT competencies today.

3 Activity Description Akin to “current events” in grade school, this activity involves students’ regular (e.g. weekly) identification and analysis of news events and “people in the news” through the “filter” of the REFLECT competencies. The activity reinforces the students’ evolving understanding and appreciation for the competencies through short weekly assignments and brief discussions.

4 General Overview for Students Example – Chris Identifies and Presents Summary of Op Ed on Marissa Mayer Telework Decision Process  Weekly Headline Discussion  Student presentations  Class Discussion  Student submission of “headline” documentation

5 Activity Modification or Challenge Opportunities (if applicable) Modification  Competency featured in headlines must model School mission/values  Faculty assign a new story for “macro” analysis of competencies  Headlines must align with student competency strengths and areas for development Challenge  Student requirement to write their own op-ed in response to their news story  Student adopt role of TV journalist and deliver a monologue “news story” on the article with emphasis on competency use/misuse
