3. Objective- Following Directions The last time we met, we focused on the AHSGE organizational patterns and sequence objective. Today we are going to discuss, read and list following directions.

5. Following Directions You have been following directions most of your life. Some of those directions were very clear, but others were implicit or not actually spoken. They were implied. When you started walking and exploring your surroundings, your parents probably said, “No, No!” when you got near something that was harmful because they were teaching you what not to do to keep you safe. When you got a little older, they could give you a look, and you knew by that look what you were supposed to do or not do. No words were actually spoken, but you knew what they meant, and all it took was a look. That look was the equivalent of implicit directions.

6. Following Directions in Reading When you are reading, you will encounter different kinds of directions. Some will be clear and tell you exactly what to do, and some will be implicit or embedded in the material. The trick is being able to find, to understand, and to follow the implicit ones as well as the clear ones.

7. Following Directions in Everyday Life In everyday life, you will encounter both stated and implicit directions. Doing your homework assignments requires that you follow directions. Making a cake from a recipe means following directions. Entering a photography contest means following the directions for submitting your entry. Planning a vacation may mean reading a brochure and following directions to get additional information or calling the correct telephone number to make a reservation.

8. Example 1 Look at the following example in your book on page 94. What is the passage instructing the reader to do? What is the passage instructing the reader to do? If you said not to follow too closely, you are right. It doesn’t come right out and say not to, but it gives the directions implicitly.

9. Further Explanation Now, let’s say that Marshall, a beginning driver, reads these instructions in the state’s driving handbook. During his next practice drive, he tailgates the car in front of him, and as a result, he rear ends the car in front of him when the driver has to stop suddenly. Has Marshall followed the implicit directions from the handbook? No, he has not.

10. Example 2 Look at the following example in your book on page 94. What kind of directions does the passage contain? What kind of directions does the passage contain? If you said implicit again, you are right. The look and the nod the wife gives the husband is her way of saying, “Tell the agent we want to buy this house.” It’s subtle, but it’s there. You just have to pay attention to what’s going on in the passage you are reading so that you don’t miss the important clues. Did the husband follow his wife’s implicit directions ? Yes, he did.

11. Example 3 Look at the following example in your book on page 95. What kind of directions does the passage contain? What kind of directions does the passage contain? If you said clear, precise ones, you are right. The person needing to follow them has a clear view of what he or she is expected to do. If the dog is fed, let out, and back in, if the front and back doors are locked, if the dog food is placed back in the refrigerator, if the dishes are put in the dishwasher, and if the kitchen lights are turned out, then all the stated directions have been followed.

12. True or False If you agree with my statement say true. If you disagree with my statement say false. You have been following directions most of your life. Implicit directions are not actually spoken. Clear or stated directions do not tell you exactly what to do.
