3  Why do countries look to tourism for economic growth?  What impacts can tourism have?  What evidence is there for success and failure? Key Question today is… What sub-questions do we need to consider to answer the key question?

4  LICs want to gain revenue – tourism as a global industry doubles every 15 years and it is the biggest growth industry, employer and source of revenue in the world.  HICs usually have high numbers of departures as residents can afford to travel – so there is a constantly renewable supply of tourists who could potentially go to LICs, who have substantially more wealth and therefore profitability for LICs can be high.  Tourism seen as the ‘smoke-less’ industry – brings substantial income, like manufacturing, minus the environmental pollution

5  For LICs, tourism is often a quicker way to raise national income, compared to exporting primary products or developing a manufacturing sector.  LICs see tourism as a more reliable earner of minerals, cash crops and manufactured goods (that have experienced price fluctuations)  Seen by LICs as an opportunity to define and raise money to preserve national culture, wildlife and unique natural features.
