3 Delivery Types and Mail Receptacles  City carriers will encounter various types of mail receptacles when serving a route  Types of mail receptacles and delivery methods on a route determine the route type 3

4 Mail Receptacles  Statements stamped on the box include “U.S. Mail” and “Approved by the Postmaster General”  Only matter bearing postage may be placed in mail receptacles  Any items not bearing postage that are placed upon, supported by, attached to, hung from, or inserted into a mail receptacle are subject to the same postage as would be paid if it were delivered by the letter carrier 4

5 Mail Receptacles  Any advertising on a mailbox or its support is prohibited  Customer must keep approach to mailbox clear to allow safe access for delivery Postmaster may withdraw delivery service if carriers continually experience difficulty  Slot on locking mailboxes must be large enough to accommodate normal daily mail volume  USPS must approve these mailboxes and they must have “U.S. Mail” stamped on the box USPS neither opens a locked box nor accepts a key 5

6 Receptacle Types  4 basic kinds of private mail receptacles: Curbside - Mounted close to the street to allow delivery from vehicle. Curbside boxes may also be near the sidewalk for walking delivery. Wall-mounted - Located in residential areas and business buildings. Usually in a unit of six to 40 boxes. 6

7 Private Receptacle Types Door slots - Usually located in the front door, garage door or installed in a wall of the home or business. Cluster box units (CBUs) -Various types of centralized boxes used in mail delivery. 7

9 Types of Delivery  Foot Delivery: Route serviced on foot using relays from locked relay boxes along the route  Curbline or mounted delivery: Route serviced at the curb from a vehicle  Park and Loop: Same as Foot route with relays; uses a motor vehicle for transporting mail to the route and as a moveable relay box  Dismount Delivery: Carriers dismount to the point of delivery (Cluster Box Units (CBUs) and Delivery Centers) 9

10 3 Types of Delivery Routes  Designation of route delivery type is located on PS Form 1564-A, Delivery Instructions, in carrier route book Business : Bulk of possible deliveries are businesses Residential: Most deliveries are residential Mixed Business and Residential: Mixture of both business and residential establishments 10
