Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin (1-3). Illus. by Marjorie Priceman. 1995, Simon & Schuster $16.00 (0-671-88239-2). 28pp. Ten instruments of the orchestra are introduced in rhyming couplets. On pages 254-264 you will find “Beginning Readers: Ages 4 through 8,” which lists books that are alphabetized by title, then lists author, short book description, age appropriateness, author’s nationality, if it is part of a series, hardcover or paperback, and will be noted if out-of-print. 22

28 Example You are looking for books on Poetry. Take a look under “Annotated Read-Aloud Lists,” “Folk & Fairy Tales, Myths & Legends: Single Stories” found on pages 411-423, Entries 1052-1093. From these entries, look for the grade level of the book you are searching for. 28

Look at “Books for Beginning Readers,” “Biographies.” – There are 44 entries on pages 169-192. – An interesting selection is Leonard Everett Fisher’s Marie Curie for ages 6-9, “A succinct biography of a remarkable scientist and woman.” Her political involvement, her research, and the dangerous work she did in the battlefields of World War I are discussed. 35

The book is about 10- year old Rudy Herrera’s comical disasters. Rudy has a positive relationship with his father. This story is an engaging picture of a Hispanic boy and his family and contains Spanish phrases. 39

43 Example A 10-year old student is interested in Gymnastics. – Look under “Sports for Everyone,” “Gymnastics,” which is on pages 312-315. – There are 9 books listed alphabetically by author. – An interesting book is Lloyd Readhead’s The Fantastic Book of Gymnastics, 1997, for ages 8-12, nonfiction. This book gives an overview of gymnastics with color photographs of regular children and world famous gymnasts. It describes equipment and how it is used. 43

46 Example You are looking for books for a Grade 4 student. Look in the “Middle Reader, Ages 8-11,” and you will find 37 listings (alphabetical by author) in the Table of Contents. One listing is Winnie-the- Pooh, by A. A. Milne, on page 110. Did you know that at the Donnell Library Center at the New York Public Library there is a stuffed bear? This bear once belonged to Christopher Robin Milne, an English boy, who received it on his first birthday. This bear was first named Edward Bear then later Winnie-the-Pooh. 46

Lists authors and book titles in the categories of historical fiction, biography, collective biography, history trade book, CD-ROM, and videotape within specific regions and time periods according to grade levels. Chapter divisions in this section are by chronological time periods or areas of the world – 2. Contains annotated bibliographies of titles listed in the first part: books, CD-ROMS, and videotapes – annotations are descriptive rather than evaluative. Annotations include author, title, publisher, price, ISBN, paper imprint, and grade levels Grade levels under the chapter listings will tell where to locate the book and multimedia categories In the grade-level listings, select titles. Then go to the appropriate section of the second part of the book 48

49 Example If you are conducting a project on China for Grade Six, look for “China,” “Grade Six,” in the Table of Contents, page 63. You will find 7 Historical Fictions, 2 Biographies, 8 Collective Biographies, 36 Histories, 1 CD-ROM, and 5 Videos. – Foster. Nien Cheng” Biography is one of the entries. You would then look for “Foster” in “Books: An Annotated Bibliography Section” – Page 144 has this complete entry. Foster, Leila Merrell. Nien Cheng: Courage in China, 1992. The annotation mentions that Nien Cheng (b. 1915) faced the Red Guards that were raiding the wealthy after 1966. She was imprisoned for 7 years and wrote about this period in Life and Death in Shanghai. 49

There are 20 entries. – Entry 269 is Sheila Black’s Sitting Bull: And the Battle of Little Big Horn, 1989. A book about Sitting Bull and the history of the conflict between whites and Indians. 52
