PALESTINE and ISRAEL By: Dharma

The brief history of Palestine The residents of Palestine are called "Palestinians“, since Palestine includes both modern day Israel and Jordan both Arab and Jewish residents of this area were referred to as "Palestinians". From 1517 to 1917 Palestine was ruled by the Ottoman Empire, but was dissolved at the end of World War I.

Jew’s and Palestine The Palestinian-Israeli conflict is, actually is a conflict over territory. Although religion plays a role in defining the identities of both sides to the conflict, and for some Jews, in justifying their claims to the land, the conflict is not, fundamentally, a religious conflict.

Birth of Israel 1948, the birth of Israel: in May 1948, the Jews of Palestine declared an independent state in their ancient homeland. Arab armies immediately attacked, and the conflict drags on six decades later.

Zionism In the late 1800s a group in Europe decided to colonize the Palestine’s land. Known as Zionists, they represented an extremist minority of the Jewish population. Their goal was to create a Jewish homeland.

World’s reaction to the creation of Israel The declaration of the state of Israel was followed within hours by the attack of the 5 neighboring Arab states upon the new country, shifting the conflict from an inter- communal to an international level of conflict. Get the support from the two new world superpowers, which are America and Soviet Union.
