G048: Lecture 07 The Project Log Mr C Johnston ICT Teacher www.computechedu.co.uk

Overview Task B is now finished and can’t be altered, It is now time to put your plan into action and create the solution to your problem, Whilst doing this to get credit for task c you need to produce a diary to document what you do whilst developing your project, The diary should cover the same time period as the planning produced in task b, The diary should be completed on a regular basis (after every lesson if possible) and under no circumstances should be “backward engineered” as you will miss detail out, The entries within your diary need to be consistent with plenty of examples from the band you wish a mark in, A template is available to assist you with the completion of your log.

Task ci Skills Used Task ci requires you to document the skills you have used whilst creating your solution, You will need to show that you have acquired new skills and how existing skills have been extended, The onus is on you to declare within the diary if you have gained a skill from scratch or if you developed existing ones, Band 3 requires you to have gained / extended skills independently – this means you have not relied up me to teach you or simply got notes off my website - you have taught yourself from some how! Ci summary MB1 (0-1) Show existing skills have been developed OR new ones acquired MB2 (2-3) Show existing skills have been developed AND new ones acquired MB3 (4-5) Show existing skills have been developed AND new ones acquired ON YOUR OWN REMEMBER To explain / prove with your log how skills have been gained include sources of information (websites, manuals etc) and how they were found.

Task ci Examples Today I made a menu using tabs. I have never used tabs before in my life so I looked in an office manual and learnt how to use the menu bar and tab selector. I used left tab, decimal tab and right tab. This answer has the makings for band 3 as skills have been learnt independently - however if log only has new skills gained then it would only be band 1 – for band 2 must have in diary examples of both new skills gained and existing skills being extended no matter how they are acquired. Today I created my menu in Fireworks we did this in year 9 so I knew what I was doing but I didn’t know how to add a drop down menu to the bar. Sir gave me a work sheet on how to do it and I followed the instructions. This answer has the makings for band 2 it’s a clear extension of existing skills which have been learnt using teachers notes - however if log only has extensions of existing skills in it then it would only be band 1 – for band 2 must have in diary examples of both existing skills being extended new skills gained Today I made a menu using tabs. I have used tabs before but only to align text left – my prices on the menu were not lining up straight and I wanted a dotted line between the label and price. I vaguely remember many years ago somebody talking about decimal tabs and leaders so I went onto the internet and did a search – I found lots of tutorials including some video ones showing me how to use the tabs menu properly. My menu now looks great with all the prices lined up and a neat dotted line between label and price making it easy to follow. To get my menu printed professionally I need to save it as a PDF – I have never used PDF software before however using the help file which came with acrobat it showed me how to create a PDF from an existing file. I now have a completed menu in PDF format ready to send to the printers. Band 3 quality answer includes both gaining new skills and extending existing ones – independently. Including the websites used would have improved the evidence. More examples in the diary of this quality and band 3 would have to be awarded.

Task cii Tools, Techniques, Teamwork Task cii has two separate aspects which are being assessed: The range of tools and techniques used for developing the ICT system An awareness that the quality of the work will effect others Tools and techniques refer to those used to manage the project and interact with others, Within your diary therefore you need to show that: Evidence of the use of formal techniques of communication with clients and other stakeholders, Consideration of how the quality of work produced will effect others

Task cii Tools, Techniques, Teamwork Task cii has two separate aspects which are being assessed: The range of tools and techniques used for developing the ICT system An awareness that the quality of the work will effect others Tools and techniques refer to those used to manage the project and interact with others, Within your diary therefore you need to show that: Evidence of the use of formal techniques of communication with clients and other stakeholders, Consideration of how the quality of work produced will effect other

Task cii Formal Tools and Techniques You need to provide evidence that you have used Emails (both sent and received) Formal agendas for meetings along with recorded minutes Letters to and from clients Log of phone calls and any follow up action Transcripts of conversations with advisors and other recognised experts

Task cii Effects On Others To show an awareness of the quality of your work and the effects on others you should consider How has the work of other influenced the development of my work? Has the way I worked influenced the work of anybody else? How have I supported the work of others? How were important decisions made and how were others informed of those decisions? How did I deal with differences of opinion? How well has what you have done met the needs to the user?

Task ciii Dealing with Issues This task requires you to described how you have dealt with issues as they have arisen, These issues may include but would not be limited to: Software issues, Hardware issues, Timing issues, Problems with working in teams, Dealing with different personalities. Evidence for this task will again come from evidence within your diary, For mark bands 2 and 3 the actions taken must be appropriate to resolve the issues and are fully justified.

Task ciii Dealing with Issues - Marks MB1 (0-2 marks) Show you have dealt with simple day to day issues MB2 (3-5 marks) Show you have been methodical in dealing with complex day to day issues. Your diary will make it clear that the responses chosen are appropriate and include justification of the actions taken. MB3 (6-8 marks) Show you have been methodical in dealing with both complex day to day issues and longer term issues which arose. Your diary will make it clear that the responses chosen have been appropriate and include justification for the actions taken. The justification will include clear evidence that you have considered long term implications of each issue that has arisen and has chosen solutions with the express intention of avoiding the reoccurrence of these issues.

Task ciii Example I didn’t know how to create two columns so I asked my teacher to point me in the right direction. This example is mark band 1 because the candidate has dealt with a straightforward issue (not knowing how to do something) in a simple manor by asking the teacher). I didn’t know how to create two columns and I couldn’t find a solution online so I needed to ask my teacher for assistance. When I went to sir he was busy teaching lessons all day so I had to arranged a time to meet the next day which delayed me by 24 hours. This example is mark band 2 - it starts off being a simple issue not knowing how to do something but turns more complex as the candidate cant find the answer and has to overcome the problem of the teacher not being available. Appropriate action is taken by booking an appointment and some justification is present. I spent this week learning how to create a master page layout. This took me longer than planned because there was more to it than I thought. I now need to revisit my plan as this has put me back by three days. I will need to check other timescales for learning new skills to prevent such as delay from happening again. This example is mark band 3 – there is a major issue of a task taking too long which has long term implications. The solution is to adjust the plan to ensure all other tasks evolving learning skills are assigned enough time to prevent issues from happening again.

Where Now??? Download the template and save it somewhere safe, Commence your solution following the plan you have written, After each session record your experiences within the template, Remember to try and develop present / learn new skills independently so best marks can be achieved for ci, Include examples of formal and informal communication techniques for task cii.
