Bringing it together From concept to execution

What does an IA do? Analyze The org The user The info Design Conceptually Logically Physically

Observation The Organization Project Scope Start the project Stakeholder Interviews Gather goals Focus groups Surveys Requirements Gathering Requirements Gathering What the Org wants Executive Fiat Social/ info Network Analysis Social/ info Network Analysis Document/ artifact analysis

The User Usability How does it work now? User Survey What do they want? What the User wants Personas Who are they? Observation Focus groups Surveys Marketing analysis Scenarios Social/ info Network Analysis Social/ info Network Analysis Document/ artifact analysis Use Cases Analylitics

Taxonomy How is it organized? Peer/Competitive analysis Content Audit The Info Heuristics What’s wrong and what is right? Content Inventory What content is there? Info flow analysis Expert Opinion Other pubs What the Info wants Standard sources Flows Specs

The Conceptual Design At a level anyone can potentially understand Is complete Is coherent Is convincing What deliverable most clearly communicates this level of your design?

The “facts” Complex owners want to – Reduce turnover – Increase occupancy – Increase “responsible behaviors” Renters want to love where they live – Location and price – Neighbors – Socio-cultural “fit” We (the intermediaries) want – To connect the two

Neighborhood and price is the start not the end of apartment hunting. We take these two attributes for granted and then let renters focus on what they really want-- a home. Using lifestyle, community and personal profiles, we will “fit” renters to a place they will love. As a result, our renters will have a real commitment to the place they rent. They will stay longer and feel much more strongly connected to the place they live Neighborhood and price is the start not the end of apartment hunting. 9 The logical vs. physical design Logical Takes the concept and works it out Is good for anyone on the team Is simply presented Is easily changed Physical Takes the logic and works it out Is good for the geekiest team members Requires technical tools Is more difficult to change

Logical Design Apt Complex Name Address Media Features Phone name type file Caption 1 or more Floor plans file Caption 1 or more type

Physical Design

Logical Design Algorithm 1.run query 1.user 2.how to sort 2.If no results show text 3.If results layout results Physical Design

Logical Design Pseudo Query What: Apartment results elements Where: A = 1 OR 2 or 3 AND B = 4 OR 5 OR 6 Pseudo Query What: Apartment results elements Where: A = 1 OR 2 or 3 AND B = 4 OR 5 OR 6 USE Northwind SELECT ProductID, Quantity AS Number_Sold, (SELECT SUM(Quantity) FROM [Order Details]) AS Total_Sold, ((CONVERT(Money, Quantity) / (SELECT SUM(Quantity) FROM [Order Details])) * 100) AS Percent_Of_Sales FROM [Order Details] Physical Design

Logical Design I’m unsure of what I want I have an idea of what I want I am committed to some specific ones You made me even more confused I can’t narrow down I can’t decide Browse feature Wizard user profiler Browse feature Wizard user profiler Facets products Viewed Favorites Social solidifiers Facets products Viewed Favorites Social solidifiers

Where do you fit? Classic business person – All conceptual – Few logical – Non physical Classical IA – Some conceptual – All logical – Few technical Classic techie – None conceptual – Some logical – All physical This course All conceptual All logical Enough physical to spark your interest This course All conceptual All logical Enough physical to spark your interest

We’re at the end of the class But the beginning of the info systems process

Analysis Design Implementation Deployment Maintenance Coding Design revision Testing Content development Platforms Sever infrastructure Performance scalability Bandwidth Support Continuing Content Development Content Automation Development Bug fixing Data analysis and use Specification

Finishing off the course

Finishing it off Bumps 1.Gather them into an envelope 2.Put your name on the envelope 3.Put them in my box by 5 PM Monday, June 4 th 4.Add to the top of your total course point score after scaling Project 1.Finish all deliverables 2.Zip into one big file 3.Upload zip to drop box by 11:59 June 3 rd 4.Upload a 360 team eval 5.You also have the option to put your name on sections you were mainly responsible for

Final Project Eval In-class presentations (10%)* – Engagement with assignment – Team participation – Professionalism Mock Job Interveiw (10%)* – Will judge the way an employer would Shows competency in the deliverable Professionally presented Final deliverable package (40%)* – Will judge the way an employer would Shows competency in the deliverable Professionally presented * Final percentages

Course scoring IA guide Percent of possible points you received *.25 Course project Percent of possible points you received *.60 Class participation Percent of possible points you received *.15 Bumps Can raise your grade a max of.2 based on your percentage vs. the max bumps received and how close you are to a grade boundary.
