3 Alfred Nobel Alfred Nobel was born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1833. His father was Immanuel Nobel, his mother Andriette. his brother was Emil. Alfred was a author, scientist, inventor, entrepreneur, and pacifist. In 1864, sadly Emil passed away. in 1867, after many years of research, Alfred had gotten a patent for dynamite. Then, in 1872, Immanuel died. In 1889 Andriette died. Distraught, Alfred goes to San Remo, Italy. On December 10, 1896, Alfred Nobel dies.

4 The Nobel Prizes In 1901, the Nobel Prizes were established. The categories for the prizes are: Chemistry, Literature, Medicine, Economics, Physics and Peace. The prizes are awarded in Stockholm, Sweden, except for the Peace prize in which it is given in Oslo City, Norway. The rewards are Nobel Diplomas, Medals, and 1 American million dollars. So far 537 Nobel Prizes have been awarded since 1901. 327 prizes have been given individually. 128 prizes, shared by 2 people. 82 prizes, shared by three people.

5 Nomination Members of national assemblies, government, or Professors of colleges, can be nominated For the Prizes by other people. The Physics and Chemistry Nobel Prizes are decided and awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. The Physiology (medicine) award is decided by the Karolinska Institute. The Literature Award is decided by The Swedish Academy. The Committee of the Norwegian Parliament decides and awards the Nobel Peace Prize. The Royal Swedish Academy has been deciding the Economics Prize ever since 1969.

6 Did You Know? Saint Theresa won the Nobel Peace Prize, but did not want the banquet, and donated the food for it to charity. The only time a Nobel Prize was declined was in 1973 when Le Duc Tho, a Vietnamese general. 89 Peace prizes have been awarded since 1901, not including the recent nomination of Barack Obama. In Alfred Nobel’s will it was unknown why he put a Peace prize to be used, but it helped the world to recognize the people who help with peace around the world.
