4 ESTABLISHMENT AND MEMBERSHIP The Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok by the five original Member Countries, namely, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Brunei Darussalam joined on 8 January 1984 Vietnam on 28 July 1995 Laos and Myanmar on 23 July 1997 Cambodia on 30 April 1999 The ASEAN region has a population of about 500 million, A total area of 4.5 million square kilometers A total area of 4.5 million square kilometers A combined gross domestic product of US$737 billion A total trade of US$ 720 billion.

5 The five foreign ministers – Adam Malik of Indonesia, Narciso Ramos of the Philippines, Abdul Razak of Malaysia, S. Rajaratnam of Singapore, and Thanat Khoman of Thailand – are considered the organisation's Founding Fathers. The motivations for the birth of ASEAN were so that its members’ governing elite could concentrate on nation building, the common fear of communism, reduced faith in or mistrust of external powers in the 1960s, and a desire for economic development.

8 The ASEAN Community is comprised of three pillars: The Political-Security Community Economic Community Socio-Cultural Community Each pillar has its own Blueprint approved at the summit level, and, together with the Initiative for ASEAN Integration (IAI) Strategic Framework and IAI Work Plan Phase II (2009-2015), they form the Roadmap for and ASEAN Community 2009-2015. ASEAN commands far greater influence on Asia-Pacific trade, political, and security issues than its members could achieve individually. This has driven ASEAN’s community building efforts. This work is based largely on consultation, consensus, and cooperation.

13 Political Objective : Promoting Peace & Stability Through political dialogue and confidence building, no tension has escalated into armed confrontation among ASEAN members since its establishment more than three decades ago.

14 ECONOMIC AND FUNCTIONAL COOPERATION ASEAN has emphasized “three pillars” of regional cooperation: security, sociocultural integration, and economic integration. The regional group has decided to pursue economic integration by creating an ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) by 2015 to establish a common market. When ASEAN was established, trade among the Member Countries was insignificant. Thus, some of the earliest economic cooperation schemes of ASEAN were aimed at addressing this situation.
