CAPACITY Composition of the Atmosphere: Progress to Applications in the user CommunITY INTRODUCTION Hennie Kelder, KNMI Head Atmospheric Composition Research Division Eindhoven University of Technology Kick Off/ Negotiation Meeting 3 Sep 2003, ESTEC, Noordwijk, NL

CAPACITY: the challenges Measuring the chemical composition of the global atmosphere from space is a relatively new. These data are of importance both for scientific and operational use. Regarding the operational use: In Europe the EUMETSAT MetOp operational satellite series will carry GOME-2 and IASI (2005-2020, three satellites). In the US the operational NPOESS series will carry the ozone sensor OMPS (2008-2018, six satellites). The chemical composition of the stratosphere as well as the troposphere is amenable to measurement from space => What are and how to realise the potential operational applications?

Example monitoring: Total ozone

Example forecasting: Ozone hole Analysis 28-9-20029-day forecast 2001 Splitting of the ozone hole

Example forecasting: UV Index

Example monitoring: Air Quality NO2 from SCIAMACHY Milano Po valley Rimini Mashhad (Iran) Bandar Abbas (steel ind.)

Example monitoring: Tropical tropospheric ozone column Valks et al, 2003, JGR, 108, 4328, 10.1029/2002JD002894

CAPACITY: overall aim The aim of the project: To make an inventory of user requirements for different applications. To develop a structure for a global monitoring system for atmospheric composition that integrates space and ground-based observations. The time frame projected for this system is the period 2010-2020, concurrent with the operational use of MetOp, NPOESS and geostationary platforms.

CAPACITY related activities Oxygen initiative ESA GMES (Global Monitoring for the Environment and Security), the joint EC +ESA initiative aims at creating a coherent and long-term functioning system for the production of policy relevant information through better use of existing and planned global observation systems. 5 th FP EU: GMES-GATO, GMES-Daedalus ESA: GMES Service Element: Atmosphere Direct involvement in research missions, Envisat, Aura, etc Eumetsat studies on geostat. composition measurements Several EU Projects 5 th FP (GOA, Evergreen, Asset,..); 6 th FP (Accent, Scout,..) 15 Summary Given the strong international developments in Earth System Monitoring there is overwhelming evidence for the continuation atmospheric composition sounding from space, including the troposphere, in an integrated approach. Capacity has a strong team with proven expertise and its partners are involved in several parallel, related international activities. There is broad support in the community for this proposal and the team is well representing the community. The challenges of CAPACITY are clear: to make an inventory of the needs, to identify and review existing and planned Global Observing Systems for atmospheric chemistry, and define the system(s) required and gaps to be filled.
