1 Far Side Observations Find the next blank page in your journal.
Title the Assignment ‘Far Side Observations’ Tape in half sheet. Write in name. Write down at least five observations from the cartoon shown.  We will revisit this soon.

2 Observations- Detailed information gathered from your senses.
Information from instruments that ‘extend our senses’ (telescopes, microscopes, thermometers or scales). Observations are your data and evidence. Can have students highlight the last “=“ statement OBSERVATIONS = DATA = EVIDENCE

3 Inferences- Inferences are explanations or conclusions based on the observations. INFERENCES = EXPLANATIONS = CONCLUSIONS

4 Observation: the turf on the football field is wet
Practice Example Observation: the turf on the football field is wet What are some inferences we could make?

5 Inferences (possible explanations): It rained last night.
It is wet from dew. Someone spilled their water bottle. A dog urinated on it. Follow with very brief discussion about how you would determine most logical/likely conclusion (i.e. more details needed to discern between choices).

6 Task Far Side Inference: -
At your table, discuss observations from the Far Side cartoon. As a group, come up with one logical inference and at least 3 observations that the inference is based upon. Task

7 Revise your original list of Far Side Observations:
-write an “O” next to all true observations -write an “I” next to any responses that were actually inferences.

8 Be prepared to report your responses to class.
GROUP TASK: OBSERVATION & INFERENCE Use the picture assigned to your group and write down 1 logical inference and 4 observations that supports your inference. Note: take 5 minutes. Be prepared to report your responses to class. Groups are assigned different photos and members in each group (exit slip)– Add photo

19 Conclusions More detail in observations = the more confidence you have in your inference. New observations/evidence can change your inference. Highlight the word Conclusion

20 an educated guess based on observations, knowledge and experiences
__________: an educated guess based on observations, knowledge and experiences _______: a scientific explanation based on a large body of evidence, observations, and data; **A well tested explanation! Hypothesis Theory Perhaps discuss examples of theories; have them highlight both vocab words after guessing what each definition is
