3 1. Decide what faculty, degree, or programs are going to be applied for. Know many programs/degrees have some flexibility in the first year. www.educationplanner.ca is a good site for BC Public post secondary institutions.www.educationplanner.ca 2. Apply on-line. Some applications request a Personal Profile or supplemental application 3. Shortly after application, go to the schools financial aid web page to see if there are any scholarships/awards of interest. 4. Ensure grades are reported at Term 2. A Delta Access Online course should be 50% complete by the application deadlines.

4  5. Allow the Ministry of Education to release the school marks to the college, by going on-line and completing a PSI form.  6. If you entering trades, book a pre-test to reduce wait times. Speak with trades advisors at colleges.  7. Once you have term 2 marks, based on the English Mark decide on the LPI. If in doubt, write the LPI.  8. April-June: Offers will come. Continue to apply for bursaries, scholarships, etc. Take tours or visit campuses. Email or meet with an advisor at the college, to confirm course selection.

5 Post-Secondary Admission Kwantlen Polytechnic University Course selection will be based on date the application was submitted and when the application fee was received. Apply as early as you can. General admission requires English 12 with a C, but depending on the program, there will be other requirements. Application Start Date: November 1, 2012 Nursing Program: Apply for November 1-7th for September 2013 intake Apply March 1-7th for January 2014 intake Recommended students apply to both intakes: only 32 seats available per intake British Columbia Institute of Technology Each program has specific requirements. Entrance is competitively based. Look at program of interest and then at entrance or program requirements. Application Start Date: October 1, 2012 Pre-Tests: Students in trades programs should write pre-tests for Math and/or English to access the waitlist more quickly.

6 Douglas College Students are accepted with general entry requirements (English 12 C+). Students registered for the University transfer program, course selection will be based on your GPA: Eng 12, Principles of Math 11 or Pre Calculus Math 11 and one academic Grade 12 course Application start date: October 15, 2012 Capilano University University Transfer Students are admitted based on their GPA: English 12 and three other academic grade 12 courses. Each Career Program has specific admission requirements. Application Start Date: September 15, 2012

7 Simon Fraser University Application start date: Oct 15, 2012 Students will self report grades in December (term 1) Admission Deadline: February 28, 2013 University of British Columbia Application start date: Sept. 1, 2012 Students will self report grades in March 2013 (term 2) Admission Deadline: January 31, 2013 (Entrance Award: Dec 10, 2012) University of Victoria Application start date: October 1, 2012 Students may self report grade Final grade 11 marks when they apply for early acceptance (85-90%) or self report grades (12) in February 2013 Admission Deadline: Feb 28, 2013

A student’s experiences inside and outside of the classroom will be reviewed. SFU Broad Based Admission is for Business Faculties, Arts and Social Sciences, Computing Science Diverse Qualifications Category to consider if you are applying close to cut offs UVIC Secondary Application is much like the personal profile and is used in certain faculties as well

10  General admission requirements + specific faculty requirements and grade averages need to be looked at under “undergraduate admissions”  Transfers between Faculties are allowed  Each course is 3 credits or 30 credits a year approximately, with the goal of an undergraduate degree  Postgraduate, doctoral degrees

11  Certificate ◦ Generally takes 3 months to 1 year to complete depending on the program  Diploma ◦ Generally takes 2 years to complete full time  University Transfer program ◦ Best route should be planned with an academic advisor at the college. 2 years = Associate Degree ◦ University Transfer programs have priority for registration over new students and the gpa required is usually lower Degree Colleges offer a limited number of degrees which can be completed at the college as well: Kwantlen, Douglas, etc

12  Warehouse and Logistics Training: Starting with Forklift Certificate, Whimis, First Aid and begin working in a warehouse DGS Canada  ECOMM training for 911, learn how to professionally answer and dispatch emergency personnel to fire, ambulance or police - Kwantlen  Vet Assistance Training, assist in veterinary clinics with pets, operations, basic care and reception duties- Douglas  Help Desk for computer program support: BCIT

13  BC Registered Physcial Fitness Instructor Training: train to lead classes at local gyms, rec. centres, etc  Event Planning or fundraising courses  Medical Office Assistant  Medical Lab Assistant  Dental Assistant  Physio or Occupational Therapy Assistant  Corrections Worker  Insurance Broker  Legal administrative assistant or paralegal Many of these courses are available at Vancouver Community College, BCIT, Associations or through a combination of work, volunteer work and industry training.

16  www.applybc.ca www.applybc.ca  Apply BC is an online registration for most BC public post secondary institutions  Create an account you can access again later  Apply to several institutions with your key info  Get instant notification your application has been received by the intended school

17  What programs, or what degree & faculty will your child apply to?  What are the institutions/colleges that your child wants (1,2, 3)  Have they checked the admission requirements? Before you go on-line, have available: grade 11& 12 courses and/or grades Credit card Social Insurance Number Personal Education Number/ Student Card *If institution asks for paper transcripts, provide these, (can obtain at school) and send via their instructions (mail/fax)

18 The Universities require students to self report grades, an initiative that allows students to report their marks over the Internet. SFU: Students report 1 st term marks in December 2012 and again in term 2 UVIC: Students reporting Grade 12 mark, do so in March 2013. If applying for conditional acceptance with grade 11 marks: Nov. 30, 2012 UBC:Students report 2nd term marks in March 2013 All offers of admission will be based on second term marks. The ministry will verify all marks in May

19  An examination that provides the Universities/Colleges with a way to determine a student’s competence in summary and essay writing, when their English marks are at a level questionable for success in that faculty.  The essay portion of the exam will determine the student’s eligibility for first year English course if not met, a course will be recommended  It costs about $120 to register & write the exam  Possible sitting April 19, 2013 at Seaquam Secondary Library  Kwantlen and Langara have an “in-house” LPI for students going there  A new change at UVIC is: an on-line quiz has replaced the LPI. UVIC will recommend if an additional English Courses is needed or not

20  The following English marks are required to be exempt from writing the LPI.  UBC Vancouver: English 12 with 75% on your final blended mark, or 80% Term 2  UBC Okanagan: English 12 with 75% on your final blended mark, or 75% Term 2  SFU: English 12 with 75% final blended mark  UVIC:On-line quiz will determine which English course you may register in. English 12 with 85% will exempt you from test  Kwantlen: English 12: “B” average final class or blended

21 The Ministry of Education provides transcript services for students who will graduate during the current school year:  Complete an online Post Secondary Institutions Selections form between November and April 30, 2013 via Student Secure Web.  A PSI session with students will be done in January 2013, but it can be done, as soon as November 2012. 22 UBC Vancouver  Pre Calculus 11 or Foundations of Math 12 is required for all Faculties without exception  Pre Calculus 12 is required for all faculties except Faculty of Arts, Music and Dental Hygiene  Passing Grade required UBC Okanagan  Does not require Pre Calculus 11 for the Faculty of Arts – will accept any Math 11

23 SFU  Pre Calculus 11 or Foundation of Math 11 required for all Faculties  Must obtain grade of 70%; A grade of 60-69% will require you to take an additional math course; below 60% will be denied admission (applies to Math 11 & 12)  Pre Calculus 12 required for all Faculty’s except for Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, Communication, Contemporary Arts, Education UVIC  Faculty of Social Sciences, Human & Social Development and Faculty of Humanities will now accept Pre Calculus 11 or Foundations of Math 11  All other Faculty’s require Pre Calculus 11 and Pre-Calculus 12  Passing Grade required in any of these  Students strongly advised to take Pre Calculus 12 if you are planning on studying Economics, Geography, or Psychology within the Social Sciences Faculty

24 Options available with Math 11 Foundations  UBC Okanagan, Faculty of Arts only  SFU & UVIC will accept Foundations of Math 11 for the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences  Kwantlen Polytechnic University – Associate of Arts & various Career Programs (1-2 year Certificate & diploma programs)  Langara, Douglas, Vancouver Community College and Capilano University – can register for any University level courses that does not have Pre Calculus 11 as a pre-requisite & various Career Programs  After completing 24 credits (8 courses) of Post Secondary Studies, you can transfer to a University (Faculty of Arts) without having to complete Pre Calculus 11  Many trades will accept with some exceptions, such as Electrical

25 UBC Requires a language 11 for all Faculties UBC Okanagan does not require a language 11 UVIC Faculty of Humanities is the only Faculty that requires a language 11 SFU Will accept a beginners language 11 for all Faculties Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Douglas College, Langara College and Capilano University have no second language requirements, but check the program * Exception to Language requirement is a learning disability
