Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Laying Out a Common Rafter for a Gable Roof The steps that follow describe the procedure for laying out a common rafter for a gable roof. Procedure

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Laying Out a Common Rafter for a Gable Roof Rafters for Gable Roofs Rafters form the skeleton of a roof.  The top of the rafter rests against the ridge board.  The bottom rests on the top plate. Top plate

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Laying Out a Common Rafter for a Gable Roof Step 1 a.Determine the unit rise and unit run for the rafter.

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Laying Out a Common Rafter for a Gable Roof Step 1 b.Place a gauge button on the tongue of the framing square at the unit rise number. Place another gauge button on the blade at 12" (unit run).

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Laying Out a Common Rafter for a Gable Roof Step 2 a.Place the square at one end of the rafter. Align the 12" unit run mark with the edge of the rafter. Align the 10" unit rise mark with the same rafter edge.

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Laying Out a Common Rafter for a Gable Roof Step 2 b.Draw the line for the ridge plumb cut along the edge of the tongue.

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Laying Out a Common Rafter for a Gable Roof Step 3 a.Determine the length of the rafter by stepping it off with a square or by using a calculator. b.Mark the length. (You will draw the line in the next step.)

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Laying Out a Common Rafter for a Gable Roof Step 4 Draw the line for the length (heel plumb line) using the same technique you used to draw the ridge plumb line. This line should be parallel to the ridge plumb line at the other end of the rafter.

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Laying Out a Common Rafter for a Gable Roof Step 5 a.Determine the width of the top plate of the wall on which the rafter will rest.

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Laying Out a Common Rafter for a Gable Roof Step 5 b.Slide the square up the rafter until the edge of the rafter intersects with that measure on the blade.

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Laying Out a Common Rafter for a Gable Roof Step 5 c.Draw a line along the blade for the seat cut of the bird’s mouth.

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Laying Out a Common Rafter for a Gable Roof Step 6 From the plumb line, mark the length of the overhang.

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Laying Out a Common Rafter for a Gable Roof Step 7 Move the square and draw a line for the tail cut.

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Laying Out a Common Rafter for a Gable Roof Step 8 a.At the ridge plumb line, shorten the rafter to allow for one-half the thickness of the ridge board.

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Laying Out a Common Rafter for a Gable Roof Step 8 b.Do this by measuring perpendicular to the ridge plumb line and drawing a line parallel to it. This is the cutting line.
