3 Skin Cancer is an Epidemic  One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.  One American dies of melanoma almost every hour (every 62 minutes).  Melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young adults 25-29 years old.  Melanoma is increasing faster in females 15-29 years old than males in the same age group.

4  Overall age-adjusted annual incidence of melanoma among young men: 4.7 cases per 100,000 persons in 1973 to 7.7 per 100,000 in 2004 (1.6x increase).  Overall rise among young women over the same period: 5.5/100,00 in 1973 to 13.9/100,000 in 2004 (2.5x increase).  Melanoma incidence among women from the 1990s: increasing & greater proportion for regional and distant disease. 7  To protect the public health, the FDA should:  Ban the use and sale of tanning devices in the US; or at a minimum, ▪ Reclassify tanning devices (to the strictest category) ▪ Restrict access to tanning beds by minors ▪ Require informed consent for all consumers ▪ Require posted warning statements ▪ Implement and enforce labeling recommendations from the TAN Act ▪ Enforce additional state regulations
