6Y 9-15-2015 Tuesday Objective: Practice historical thinking skills. Know how to write an “A+ answer”. Agenda: 1.Do Now: Finish analyzing the primary source document from our last class. 2.Discuss Do Now. 3.Lesson Notes: How to write an A+ answer 4.Application of A+ answer. Homework if you don’t finish.

1.Source the image. Where and when do you think it’s from? What makes you think this? What do you think this is and what is it used for? 2.What do you think life was like during this time? What values or beliefs could this society have?

Clues from the Evidence – not guesses or predictions, but hard facts Conclusions/Predictions about the society based on the clues. Subject – very rich river, canoeThey are civilization that lived by water. They build canoes and know how to use them. So they use and rely on the water. People are grabbing birdsThey are a society that hunts (esp. birds?) There is a person stabbing the fishThis society fishes The topic of the picture seems to be hunting/fishing This society hunts and fish in the river or marshes. So the river/water is a very important part of life? People in the canoe are larger, taller (showing leadership?), Men in the canoe are biggest, people in the canoe are wearing more, men in the canoe are getting served/helped Men in the canoe are doing the actual hunting/fishing Everyone else helps. That hunters and fishers are very important in this society. They hold power. Leaders? Considered as more important than other people. Clothes and jewelry are being worn by everyone They are a rich society Why do the women in the canoe seem to be holding the men? The women don’t want them to fall out of the boat. The two men are leaders. The women are supporting them. Women play an important role in supporting the men. The picture seems to be a reflection of both sides. Except for the top left. This looks like it’s from Ancient Egypt – clothes and jewelry, location (near a river – Nile), same facial look as in Egyptian art, colors are more natural/neutral similar to Egyptian Art.

Lesson Notes: How to Write an A+ Answer An answer that you are positive about. A VERY serious try to answer the question properly. DETAILED – who, what, when, where, WHY and HOW COMPLETE SENTENCES. Always connect your claims to evidence – SUPPORT YOUR ANSWERS WITH DETAILS!!!! Usually this takes more than just a paragraph.

Historical Thinking Practice 1.Source the image. Where and when do you think it’s from? What makes you think this? What do you think this is and what is it used for? 2.What do you think life was like during this time? What is the opinion of the maker of this object?

What does this flag tell about society of that time? A+  This flag has a picture of a snake. The snake is broken into pieces with abbreviations. Based on what they are, they seem to stand for the states. It may be from the Revolutionary War because the first 13 colonies are represented. The flag also states “Join, or die”. This is saying that the colonies are powerless if they do not join. However, if they do join, they become one snake. A snake is a powerful creature that can fight and cause damage. It has venom and can strike. This could be a way that the author tried to motivate colonists to join in the fight. There is strength in being united. The author was in support of war. I think that this is about war because he is talking about joining together or dying. A snake fights or defends when it is alive.

Homework due Wednesday 9/16 (copy and complete in your notebook) Write an A+ answer to the following question: What can you tell about Egyptian life and society based on the painting we investigated in class?

Afternoon Prayers In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. AMEN Act of Faith O my God, I firmly believe that You are one God in three divine Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I believe that Your divine Son became man and died for our sins and that He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe these and all the truths which the Holy Catholic Church teaches because You have revealed them, Who can neither deceive nor be deceived. Amen. Examination of Conscience for Virtue of the Month Act of Contrition My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against You, whom I should love above all things. I have hurt myself and others. I firmly intend, with Your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In His name, my God, have mercy. Amen. In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. AMEN
