1 Unit 17

2 Dissolution: the process in which an ionic solid dissolves in a polar liquid. AgCl (s) ↔ Ag + (aq) + Cl - (aq) Precipitation: the process in which ions leave a solution and regenerate an ionic solid. Solubility equilibrium: the rate of solid dissolving is equal to the rate of solid precipitating.

3  Dissociation: the separation of ions that occurs when an ionic compound dissolves  Precipitate: the solid formed when ions leave a saturated or supersaturated solution.

4  AgCl (s) ↔ Ag + (aq) + Cl - (aq)  K sp = [Ag + ][Cl - ]
