3 OLYMPIC HISTORY In 1901 the Olympics were called the Nordic Games!!! In 1901 the Olympics were called the Nordic Games!!! The Olympic games only happen every four years. The Olympic games split into the Summer Olympics and the Winter Olympics because some need snow and some do not! They were held in different cities. Officials decided to have the Olympics happen every two years instead.

7 OLYMPIC MASCOTS There are three Olympic Mascots: Quatchi, Miga and Sumi. Mukmuk is our “electronic” mascot. Quatchi is my fav mascot. Quatchi likes hocky like me!!! He wants to be an Olympic goalie one day. Quatchi, a sasquatch, lives in the mysterious forests of British Columbia. He is timid or shy but loves making new friends and traveling. I am most like Miga. Miga likes hot cocoa just like me!!! Miga likes to have adventures with his friends. Her favourite food is fish and berries. She is half Orca whale and half kermode bear.

8 MUKMUK Did you know that Mukmuk is an electric mascot? HOME: Vancouver island sub-alpine meadows! HOBBIES: He loves to eat everything! Mukmuk likes to make new friends and he likes to burrow!!! FAVOURITE FOOD: Flowers, ferns and berries DREAM: Mukmuk’s dream is to tell the world about his fellow island marmots because they are an endangered species!!! FAV Colour: Berry Orange

9 VANCOUVER 2010 OLYMPIC LOGO THE VANCOUVER 2010 WINTER OLYMPIC LOGO IS A STONE MARKER IT GUIDES THE PEOPLE OF CANADIAN ARCTIC AS THEY TRAVEL. THE LOGO’S MASCOT IS ILANAAQ AND IT REPRESENTS LEADERSHIP, COOPERATION AND FRIENDSHIP. ILANAAQ MEANS FRIEND IN THE NATIVE INUIT LANGUAGE. THE LOGO ALSO REPRESENTS PEACE!!! THE BLUE AND GREEN REPRESENTS THE CANADIAN WEST COST ISLANDS, FORESTS AND THE MOUNTAIN RANGES. THE RED REPRESENTS THE CANADIAN MAPLE LEAF WHILE THE GOLD IS FOR THE BRILLIANT SUNRISES THAT LIGHT UP THE VANCOUVER DOWNTOWN SKYLINE AND THE SURROUNDING SNOW.

10 OLYMPIC TORCH RELAY The torch was lit by the sun’s rays in Greece where it traveled around the country for 8 days. It was then handed over to Canadian officials who flew it by jet to Victoria. It arrived in Victoria on October 30, 2009. This was the beginning of the official 2010 Torch Relay. The torch has travelled across Canada and back, over 45 000 km. It has been carried by 12000 torch bearers. The Torch Relay will end with a famous Canadian athlete running with the torch into the “Opening Ceremony” and lighting the cauldron. This happens on February 12, 2010. The flame will stay lit during the 2010 Olympics.
