Vancouver 2010 Olympics

OLYMPIC MOTTO AND CREED Citius-altius-fortius Faster-higher- stronger “The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.”

World War 2 stopped the Olympics from 1939 - 1948 All the events in the Winter Olympics have to do with ice and snow.

OLYMPICS IN CANADA CALGARY WINTER OLYMPICS 1988 MONTREAL SUMMER OLYMPICS 1976

Olympic mascots

The three Olympic mascots are Quatchi, Sumi and Miga. Mukmuk is our “electronic” mascot. My favourite mascot is Quatchi. Although Quatchi is shy, he loves making friends and having adventures. He is hoping to work hard and become an Olympic Goalie. One of his favourite things to do is travel with friends and take pictures. I am most like Quatchi because we both like chill blue. I love traveling too and once I even went up a mountain. Like Quatchi I also like photography.

Mukmuk is a cyberspace mascot who cheers on his friends and the Olympic Athletes. Mukmuk and all of the other marmots are an endangered species that only live on Vancouver Island. Mukmuk is trying to tell the people of Canada that the marmots are in danger. He loves to make friends with other marmots. Some people wanted Mukmuk to get official mascot status but only 200 people signed the petition so Mukmuk will remain in cyberspace.

OLYMPIC TORCH RELY The Olympic torch was lit by the sun in Greece. It then traveled around Greece for 8 days before it was brought to Canada by a jet. It arrived in Victoria, BC on October 30, 2009. This was the start to the 2010 Torch Relay. The Olympic torch moved across Canada visiting every province and every territory. Over 12 000 Canadians were torch bearers. It’s journey will end on February 12 when a “mystery” Canadian will carry the torch into the “Opening Ceremony” and light the Olympic caldron.

2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics Logo The Olympic Inukshuk is a very important part of the Olympics. It is the logo for the 2010 Olympics. Inukshuks are stone markers that are used to guide people when they are traveling in the Arctic. It represents leadership, cooperation, friendship and human spirit. The Olympic Inukshuk is made up of 5 stones. The blue and green represent the Canadian West coast islands, forests and mountains. The red represents the Canadian maple leaf and the gold represents the sunrises in downtown Vancouver.
