2 Information about Bachelor of Nursing (Indigenous Australian Health)  Is a 4 year degree introduced in 2003  Majors in Indigenous studies/ health  Allows students to study Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues such as culture, history, pre contact, politics, health, and international comparison of other Indigenous peoples  Both Indigenous and non- Indigenous students will be prepared to work successfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their communities.  Interesting that the spiel on the Bachelor of Nursing (IAH) ends with the University of Sydney’s commitment to improving education for Indigenous peoples in Australia and thought their studies in nursing graduates of Sydney will be able to make a national contribution to the health of Indigenous peoples. 3 FACULTY OF NURSING College of Health Sciences University of Sydney INDIGENOUS EDUCATION VISION STATEMENT INDIGENOUS EDUCATION VISION STATEMENT This Indigenous vision statement is an important and integral part of the Faculty’s commitment in addressing the variety of Indigenous social justice, socio-economic disadvantage and health issues, which affect the health of Indigenous Australians adversely. With the introduction of the new Bachelor of Nursing (Indigenous Australian Health) degree and the new Bachelor of Nursing degree in 2003, the Faculty of Nursing is taking visionary steps forward and embarking on a journey of better education and Indigenous inclusive curricula. The Faculty has an important role in addressing the general lack of awareness and understanding of Aboriginal history, cultural values, community protocols and diversity of Indigenous people. A collaborative consultative process involving all parties needs to be conducted with integrity, co-operation, collaboration and partnership, with good faith and understanding. It is about empowering, strengthening and recognising Australian Indigenous peoples’ ideals and cultural beliefs through education, so that we can move forward and participate in meaningful debate on the issues of health education. It is about enhancing and improving the health status and quality of life of Indigenous Australians through the undergraduate and postgraduate programs and research. It is about ensuring that all nursing graduates of the Faculty will have the necessary knowledge, attributes and understanding of protocols for practising with Indigenous peoples and communities and for creating a better understanding of Indigenous Australians and their health issues. It is about providing better educational and cultural outcomes for all graduates of the Faculty who can better service the health care for our diverse Indigenous communities. RESSOs Conference 2004
