Summary 1. Preparation 2. Engagement : THIS IS EVERYTHING!!!!! 3. Words and Pictures 4. Family Safety Guidelines 5. Similar but different - role play 6. Family Safety Plan 7. Follow-up susie essex 201311/4/2015

. Engagement : ….. To do what? Engagement to work together on a family safetyplan to show that the children are safe So…be goal-oriented (5 goals) susie essex 201311/4/2015

Based on  Not being rude  Not getting in their way  No gratuitous opinions Respect, in child protection based on Rigour and Grace susie essex 2013 11/4/2015

 Listening carefully.  Use their Language and where necessary run their words alongside professionals words.  Interrupt only to underline strengths and resources (rest=collecting mushrooms again)  Be clear about own role, relationship to referrer, and limits to confidentiality. Coming in from the outer edge susie essex 2013 11/4/2015

 Following not leading.  Curiosity about others views and opinions.  A stance of curiosity and not knowing too quickly.  Warming the context to ask about more difficult aspects.  Allow them to tell their story, this is not agreeing but expressing interest in their perspective and ideas. Pictures to Underscore Listening. So X would have seen you were surprised when the doctor called the ambulance.” susie essex 2013 11/4/2015

 Could we leave whether you did it or not to one side, up on a shelf so to speak?  If the dispute was easy to resolve I guess it would have happened by now.  Current research indicates, I can understand from the research and literature why they are worried but i do hear what you are saying, I have made a note of it here.  Don’t be tempted to give a definitive position. susie essex 2013 11/4/2015

 Haring boning.  Meaning going from difficult to easy subject and back.  Similar to what a therapist does:  If stress too high: support, if ‘too low’, automatic pilot: more confronting questions. 11/4/2015 susie essex 2013

 Equalizing, trying to restore some of the power balance that seems to have been lost.  Susie does this for instance by stressing that feelings and behaviour are mutual, maybe unnoticed at the time, but…..  (video) 11/4/2015 susie essex 2013

 Placing seeds of doubt?  Stressing that doubt is good for you and good for Child Protection  The advantage of Resolutions is that doubt can be explored in more detal in the S but D 11/4/2015 susie essex 2013

 I see Susie sometimes giving compliments for something that I didnt believe was ‘real’.  Susie tries not to think too much of something but rather be ‘playing a straight bat’: What they throw is what they get…  Susie remarked that having a network person in early gives room for more different voices earlier on. 11/4/2015 susie essex 2013

 Checking constantly where parents are:  How are we going with these questions?  What are your worst fears?  Best hopes? 11/4/2015 susie essex 2013
