2 Movement of people page 36 *Migration is the movement of people --conditions attract people from their homeland **Example --early people moved in search for food --today people move for jobs or better opportunities --some are pushed from their homes. --in 1930’s drought caused crops to fail and families left their farms or sold them to find work elsewhere.

3 Immigration is the movement of people into a new place --immigrants leave their home to live in another country. Some are pushed others are pulled. --In the 1800’s potato crops fail in Ireland, they did not have enough resources to feed everyone. --lots of Irish people starved to death --some moved to the United States. --Many people came to North America to escape wars. --people from Africa and Eastern Europe came to the United States --the way people moved have changed *in the past people traveled by foot, wagons, boats or on trains. *today people use automobiles, buses and airplanes.

4 Moving Goods and Ideas pg. 38 Moving goods and ideas have improved over the years. Moving Goods Because no place has everything, people must travel to get the goods they need. American Indians created trade network. --New inventions has made it easy to carry goods --1700s sailing ships carried goods from North America --1807 steam engines --1830 locomotives or railroads today automobiles and truck made moving goods faster and easier --Example: Pan America Highway runs from Canada through the U. S., Central America into South America. --Today airplanes carry goods so that people can get fresh foods.
