1 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Experimental Facilities J.P. Hill Experimental Facilities Division Director PAC Meeting November 20, 2007

2 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Hanfei Yan Xianrong Huang BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES XFD Organization Includes 1nm R+D effort Includes 0.1 meV R+D effort During construction phase, beamline groups will grow to: 2 scientists 1 designer 1 engineers/technicians Engineering support matrixed from ASD Hill BroadbentMiceli Cai Sanchez-Hanke NorthrupAblett Evans-Lutterodt Berman

3 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Division Hiring A. Broadbent (Beamline Mgr) Interviews underway for: Deposition scientist Soft x-ray Group Leader Powder Diffraction Group Leader Nanoprobe Group Leader Plus open requisitions for: 1nm post-doc Deposition post-doc 0.1 meV scientist Detector post-doc XAS Group Leader Hard Coherent Scattering Group Leader Y. Cai (IXS Group Leader) X. Huang (0.1 meV R+D) L. Miceli (Interface Mgr) H. Yan (1 nm R+D) Recent Hires

4 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Project Beamline Design Process Begun with CDR (Dec ’06) Written with contributions from internal and external scientists Project Beamlines selected. Approved by EFAC (May ’07) Breakout sessions held at User workshop (July ‘07) Outside engineering firms contracted for more detailed conceptual design (July - Sept ‘07). Beamline specific user workshops to be held (by early ’08) Powder: Jan 17 th, XAS: Jan 16 th ; Hard Coherent Jan 10 th,11 th BATs selected for project beamlines (by spring ’08) Design begun in earnest with active engagement of BAT and facility staff. (‘08 to ‘12)

5 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Project Beamlines Project goal: To provide a minimum suite of insertion device beamlines to meet physical science needs that both exploit the unique capabilities of the NSLS-II source and provide work horse instruments for large user capacity. The beamlines are: Inelastic x-ray scattering (0.1 meV)U20 undulator Nanoprobe (1 nm)U20 undulator Soft x-ray coherent scattering and imagingEPU45 undulator Hard x-ray coherent scattering and SAXSU20 undulator Powder diffraction Damping wiggler XAS Damping wiggler

6 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Outstanding Design Issues Questions raised by EFAC, Design Reviews and SC reviews: XAS beamline on damping wiggler: Heat load, scientific case Soft coherent scattering Scientific mission IXS beamline Extended straight section. Coupling to R+D program Nanoprobe beamline Coupling to R+D program Hard Coherent beamline XPCS and Coherent diffraction now separate beamlines

7 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Experimental Facilities Schedule

8 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Estimated Cost Profile

9 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Experimental Facilities Staffing

10 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Beamline Cost Estimates N.B. Costs are burdened and escalated

11 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Basis of Cost Estimate and Comparisons Points of Comparison : 1) APS: IXS beamline (sector 30), operational in Feb 2007 (largely in-house design): Capital cost = $6.5M (+APS Labor) Schedule: 5 years from start of funds to operations. 2) Australian Synchrotron: (Largely turn-key contracts) 9 Beamlines delivered for AUS$67 M (~ $67 M USD after taking escalation into account) Schedule: 3 years from first hire to first light. Basis of Estimate : Engineering firms provided quote for capital items. Approximately 60% of the beamline costs are based on these quotes.

12 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Construction Phase Issues Matrixing Issues: Engineering support (in ASD) Controls (ASD) Interface issues (front ends, insertion devices, extra- long straights) In-house approach vs. vendor approach Labor estimates adequate? BAT process means beamline definition lags accelerator and conventional designs

13 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Summary Designs are in hand and cost estimates complete for the 6 project beamlines, based on experimental requirements for these techniques. These are documented in Preliminary Design Report (PDR) and associated RSI documents. The user community is being engaged in the design and construction of these beamlines through the BAT process. There are technical and cost risks in achieving performance goals on all the project beamlines. The technical risks have been identified and we are managing to them. They are being mitigated through R+D, alternate strategies and contingency. Schedule risks are small. Organizational structure is in place to manage the design and construction of these beamlines. Active recruitment is underway.
